Book Blurb

When a hostile leprechaun forces an inept wizard to flub the spell he’s casting on a mini-giant, the result can only be… fondness? Waltham has accidentally spelled Ian into liking him, and now his hostage/windfall, aka Mindy, insists he fix it before she’ll turn over the pot of gold she rightfully owes him.

Waltham’s figure is as stringy as his hair, and his words are as sharp as his nose. He’s a selfish, greedy fledgling wizard with a ratty hat and a worse attitude. There’s no way someone as handsome and kindhearted as Ian would like him without magic in play. But as the three reluctant companions set out on a quest to assemble the ingredients for an anti-spell, a different kind of magic happens. Ian’s unflagging belief that Waltham is worthy of love makes Waltham begin to wish it were true.

There are grasshopper gonads to be collected, moonbeam crystals to be harvested, kitten tears to be wrung, and somewhere, at the end of the rainbow, a pot of gold to be won. But if Waltham can overcome his upbringing and mend his ways, then maybe—once the spell has been lifted—something real will remain.

Book Review

‘Impossibly Fond’ is a fun, lighthearted, slightly steamy story that straddles the fence between fantasy and fairy tale. The story contains all the elements for fantasy – leprechauns, fairies, giants, magic, wizards, and more – while there is a definite moral to the tale.

The story is about Waltham – Walt – and the book blurb summarizes his personality right down to the attitude. Walt was not my favorite character. I found him a bit too self-centered, self-absorbed, and just not really a nice person. And I believe that is the impetus of the book; Walt has a bit of growing to do to get to that Happily Ever After.

Mindy was a hoot, a feisty leprechaun with secrets of her own. Ian was my favorite character – honest, astute, humorous, empathetic, and seriously, how can I not like a character who has his own castle complete with a cow and chickens? Ian and Mindy balance out Walt’s less than optimal attributes.

I noted in the first paragraph that this is a somewhat steamy book. I admit to being a bit surprised at how quickly our two male characters went from introductions to the sack. It does, however, set up the puns and witty comments for the remainder of the book. So worth it.

Ultimately, this is a light fantasy/fairy tale that is quick to read, has an interesting set of characters, a little moral to the story, and plenty of warm fuzzies to keep the pages turning.
