Book Blurb

Even at college in San Diego, Chauncey “Chuckles” Sawyer is able to laugh off just about anything. Except when his best friend, Ryan Norton, has sex dreams about him. Awake, Ryan can’t remember doing so. Should Sawyer speak out or remain silent?

Then, Sawyer learns that Ryan is a merman, a supernatural ocean creature. And Sawyer is supposed to be his mate—though he’s not gay or even bisexual like Ryan. To be with his straight mate, Ryan has sacrificed his happiness to be just a friend to Sawyer. It’s up to Sawyer to test the waters and see if they could be more.

But what happens when Sawyer gets a chance to decide the matter of the mating bond, once and for all, for both of them? And what is the second dangerous secret Ryan is keeping in store for the future? One thing is certain, though.

Their friendship will never be the same.

Book Review

Sometimes best friends can be almost as close as lovers, and Sawyer and Ryan are a perfect example of that. They’ve been friends since high school, are rooming together in college and have plans to find jobs and work together as well. There is only one problem (other than a couple of pretty significant secrets Ryan has never shared with Sawyer): Ryan knows that Sawyer is his mate, yet Sawyer is as straight as they come. Once Sawyer discovers one of Ryan’s secrets (that he is a merman), everything else that follows is a roller-coaster adventure of the emotional kind that had me turning the pages in the hope of Sawyer and Ryan being able to figure things out.

Sawyer would not want to miss Ryan for the world, but he is not inclined to wish for a relationship. Their friendship is deep, they share everything, and in many ways, they behave like a couple. But Sawyer believes he is straight, so when he discovers that Ryan has wet dreams about him, he is shocked. Then it turns out that Ryan is a merman, and by the time Sawyer is told they are mates, he really doesn’t know what to think. But he does wish he could be who Ryan needs him to be.

Ryan believes he can never be with Sawyer as a mate, and he accepts that. He tells himself it’s enough to have Sawyer as his best friend, as long as they can stay together. Since the oceans are no longer safe for merfolk (thanks to pollution and overfishing), they mostly live on land and are pretty much a dying species. Ryan never expected Sawyer to change his sexuality – not that he could – so when Sawyer becomes more curious and joins him in a dream, something only mates can do, Ryan is surprised by what happens between them. It’s only one of many revelations to follow, and the truth that emerges is surprising, showing the author’s talent for worldbuilding and imaginative solutions.

If you like mermen but prefer new and different ways of imagining them, if you want to watch a straight man realize love is about more than sex as he faces unexpected dangers and challenged with the man who loves him, and if you’re looking for a read where the mating bond is more important than anything else, then you will probably like this novella.
