LAPD Detective Sean Hennessey has one person he’s repeatedly tried to arrest and bring to justice: his nemesis, Mitchell Yates.
Yates has been in and out of trouble for years, always skating around the edges of LA’s underbelly; however, Sean can never pin anything on him.
But one night all of that changes.
Caught in the wrong place at the wrong time, instead of arresting Yates, Sean is rescued by him and taken to Yates’ home—a satellite high above Earth. There, Sean discovers a world he thought possible only in Science Fiction.
Everything he believed he knew about Yates is turned upside down, and Sean must make a decision: to remain with the LAPD or join Yates and work toward intergalactic peace.
Building a different world is always a challenge. This one was interesting – it was close enough to the present that its discrepancies sort of sneaked up on me. The book starts out fairly normal, just like a contemporary tale, then these elements of mystery and somewhat unexpected differences are introduced. I learned along with Sean, the main character who tells the story, and slowly found out about the Keepers.
Sean Riker is a very dedicated police detective, and tenacious to boot. Even when he finds out the criminal he has been after (Mitchell Yates) is not what he seems, it takes him a while to adjust. I didn’t find out a lot about what drives him, or what his real passions are. He seems to drift along a lot after discovering this new world. Not that I can blame him – it is the kind of discovery that would shake anyone’s world!
Yana, the real name of Mitchell Yates, is one of the Keepers, and remains somewhat mysterious even after Sean begins to spend time with him. There are more details now than there were in the first edition of this story, but I am still curious to find out more. He has spent twenty years doing this job, and is just as dedicated as Sean. He has grown up in a very peaceful environment, a total utopia compared to Earth. However, issues with fellow humans still exist, and his is called Jimmy. I was a little annoyed at the lack of fervor and passion Yana showed when Jimmy starts making inappropriate comments, but I guess that is just the way the Keepers handle things.
If you like stories with a leisurely pace, science fiction that is just far enough out of our reach to be interesting, and slowly developing relationships between two men who are surprised by their feelings for each other, then you might like this novel.
