The note attached to her grandmother’s will has left debutante Mae St. John with this: the family fortune is gone; the father she never knew lives in Louisiana; and her only income is a modest trust fund left for the care of Big Mae’s poodle, Rhett.

Hog-tied by her father’s financial predicament and mental decline, Whit Casey is not happy at being strong-armed to hire Mae, who knows nothing about quarter horse racing, to write for her racing magazine and dot-com. Still, attraction grows between the two women until Mae’s investigation into a horse cloning controversy implicates Whit and the colt she is depending on to stop the foreclosure of her father’s farm. It’s a race against time to clear the colt before the big race and claim what both women desire most in their lives—someone to hold them forever.

Book Review

D. Jackson Leigh from the incredible Bold Strokes Books publishing company has written a story wrapped in southern gentility yet barreling down to a cliffhanger ending that was very pleasurable. That this was all centered within the world of horse racing made it especially desirable for me. Then, the oh so sweet love affair added a hot and heartwarming cohesiveness that was strongly tested. This is another gem that should not be missed.

Mae St. John is deceptively adept, ingenious, and congenial. I loved her right from the beginning as she deals with the death of her beloved grandmother up to the poignant grief shattering her world as the cliffhanger attempts to swamp everyone near and dear to her. This sharp cookie is a jewel and I believe the true centerpiece and force within this book. Marvelous!

Whitley Casey is one powerhouse dyke with an incredible internal capacity to love. She has a bit of an anger management glitch, but she is generally on point when it comes to her dad’s quarter-horse training farm and his progressive Alzheimer condition. There are enormous pressures bearing down on her, but by and large she manages rather well. The love connection between Whit and Mae is such a captivating development that seems to take both of them a bit by surprise. It was a treasure to see it unfold. I was personally very amused and delighted by Ms. Casey. I can imagine her being an amazing buddy. Wonderful!

This was simply a totally delightful read with a great setting, wonderful characters, compelling storyline, and a charming ending. I don’t think anything was missing here making this an almost perfect reading experience. Let me know if you agree! Oops, the meaning of this wonderful title is not revealed till the very last page. Sneaky but clever!
