Book Review

‘His Heart’s Desire’ is a rare treat for me - a sweet, romantic short story by J.P. Barnaby. It’s a fantasy about the man who has been Santa Claus for the last one hundred years, and I found the idea that the job rotates every so often an intriguing one. All the more since the guy fulfilling the role for what seems like an eternity to a human is then rewarded with his heat’s deepest desire.

Matthew has been Santa for one hundred years, and while the job is lonely with only the elves for company, he has done a good job. Now that it comes time to choose his reward he is in real trouble. He has no idea what his heart’s greatest desire is, and he doesn’t know how the post-reward situation will work. Luckily Father Time, in charge of handing out the jobs and the rewards, has a pretty god idea what Matthew wishes for and sets about giving Matthew exactly what he wants. What a delightful surprise!

If you like imagining different types of Santa mythologies, if you want to find out more about two men who never thought they could be together, and if you’re looking for a read that is as cute as it is sweet, then you will probably like this short story as much as I do.
