Book Blurb

Since the death of his father, Trick Grigsby has fought to keep his head above water. Following in his father’s footsteps as a talented architect, he hopes to work his way up at the firm. Unfortunately, the company’s new owner barely resembles the man who was once Trick’s father’s best friend. Trick’s days are filled with drudgery and cruel remarks from the man who was supposed to be his mentor—along with his two sons, whose only jobs seem to be making Trick’s life miserable.

But all that is about to change.

Edwin Goodmaker struggled through his fairy godparent curriculum, but his mother—the reigning Fairy Queen—has a simple solution: Edwin will go to New York City and get some practical experience. When he meets Trick, Edwin knows he’s found a worthy charge, and he’s sure he can help Trick achieve all of his heart’s desires. Edwin falls for Trick, but with everything standing in their way, a fairy-tale ending might remain nothing more than a dream.

Book Review

“Have courage and be kind. Where there is kindness there is a goodness, and where there is goodness, there is magic.” ~ Cinderella (Walt Disney Productions)

When his father's business is left entirely to his business partner, Trick, of 'His Fairy Godfather' by Cate Ashwood and Nico Jaye, Trick isn't bitter about it. He worshiped his father; he assumes that, since his dad's partner has more experience, it's a wise business decision. Trick becomes an architect while working for his dad's partner and intends to buy his way back into the business as partner as soon as he can save enough money. The problem with that plan is, his boss and his two lazy sons treat Trick like a servant, never giving him the opportunity to shine and certainly never intend to give him partnership in the company. Trick is discouraged at the sorry state of his existence and wants to give up until he saves the life of Edwin Goodmaker, an eccentric young man who helps him turn his life around.

Edwin is new to New York and is in awe of all the fast moving cars and people and bright lights but he's not there on vacation. Edwin is on an internship of sorts, learning how to perfect his skills as a fairy godfather. When he meets Trick, although he can tell he's sad, Edwin is struck by his kindness and decides on the spot that this man is worthy of being his first fairy godson. Edwin doesn't tell Trick who he is at first, but begins to fulfill his task of making Trick's life happier. Edwin doesn't have the capacity to change people's minds about things but he can surely influence the outcome. He begins to use his skills of receiving impressions from people, particularly Trick to discover the source of his unhappiness and help him untangle the web he's gotten himself into. Predictably, Edwin falls for Trick although he knows it can never be. Yet Edwin unselfishly continues to guide his charge toward things Trick thinks he wants using some magic on the way because he still has a trick or two up his sleeve where he keeps his wand.

Trick thinks that Edwin has to be the most gullible, naïve man he's ever known but he's drawn to his kindness and his constant smile. Edwin is also the nicest person he has ever known. Just being with him makes Trick happier. The burden he carries seems not as heavy when Edwin is around. Instead of totally freaking out when Edwin finally comes clean about who he is and what he can do, Trick is amazed and has a ton of questions for him. With Edwin's support, he is able to make the changes necessary in order to feel better about himself. Trick begins to realize how much he feels for Edwin but wonders how it could ever work between them.

This is an unusual take on the Cinderella story in which Trick falls in love with his fairy godfather instead of the “prince” who is Trick's handsome coworker. How he outsmarts his wicked stepmother, aka his boss, and the two wicked stepsisters, aka the boss’s sons, is pure genius. I loved the way Cate and Nico worked it out. Edwin is one of the sweetest characters ever! He personifies an ideal person and would make a wonderful friend and lover. Although he gets bogged down mostly because he's being deceived, Trick always takes the high road, rising above the pettiness of his boss and sons, which keeps his dignity intact. And who ever knew fairy godfathers could be so hot in bed!

If you enjoyed Cinderella, you will love this modern take on the story which, just like Cinderella, has a happily ever after. Thanks, Cate and Nick, for a delightfully entertaining story and for reminding me of Cinderella's words of advice: "No matter how your heart is grieving, if you keep on believing, the dream that you wish will come true."
