When Shay O’Hanlon’s ill-mannered friend Baz steals a stuffed snake from a wealthy businessman, he wasn’t expecting it to be filled with money. Nor was he expecting his aunt Agnes to take it with her on vacation to the Big Easy.
With trigger-happy thugs in hot pursuit, Shay leads her friends on a rowdy rescue mission from Minneapolis to New Orleans and back. Along the way, a bungled burglary puts the gang in a drug cartel’s cross hairs, and a beautiful professor offers the only way out. But can Shay and the gang trust her with their lives?
Jessie Chandler has brought back the characters we loved from Bingo Barge Murder along with spunky heroine Shay O’Hanlon to uncover her latest caper in Hide and Snake Murder. Shay, a coffee shop owner and amateur super sleuth, is squeezed into a new misadventure this time with her friend Baz, whose errors in judgment makes me wonder if he’s truly a friend at all.
Shay’s detective girlfriend JT is unfortunately out of town at a conference for most of this story so Shay, Baz, and true blue friend Coop head to the Big Easy which is where it actually gets much more complicated. In New Orleans, Shay’s elderly friend/mother figure, Eddy, and Rocky, a lovable gentle soul, are also entangled in the puzzling mystery surrounding a not so harmless stuffed snake. After narrowly escaping abduction, Shay and company, return to Minneapolis to unearth clues and team up with a “professor” of sorts along the way. The mystery uncoils in a shoot out where I found myself surprised by the outcome.
There are many laugh out loud funny moments and the endearing characters will keep you invested in the outcome. If you like rooting for the under dog, you’ll like this story. It gets a bit romantic at the end when JT returns from her trip. I’m hoping JT makes more of an appearance in the next book. This was truly a joy to read from thrilling beginning to warm fuzzy ending.
