True love’s kiss can break the curse. But then what?
Cole Alpin runs a small-town candy store. He visits his grandmother twice a week. And sometimes he breaks curses.
Leo Ericson’s curse is obvious right away, spiderwebbing across his very nice body. Though something about it worries Cole, he agrees to help—with little idea of what he’s getting into.
Leo is a serial monogamist, but his vampire ex has taken dating off the table with his nasty spell, and Leo needs Cole’s companionship as much as his help. When the hex proves to be only the beginning of his problems, Leo seeks refuge at Cole’s place. Too bad magic prevents him from finding refuge in Cole’s arms.
Cole’s never had a boyfriend, so how can he recognize true love? And there’s still the matter of the one responsible for their troubles in the first place….
The curse-breaking ability of kisses is legendary, except that isn’t all that’s needed for Cole and Leo to figure out their future. Plus Leo’s curse comes from a jealous ex-lover who is also a vampire, there seems to be someone still after Leo even though the former lover is out of the picture, and there is more than one other obstacle in the way of love taking its course. With a great mix of humor, magic, and serious issues ‘Hex and Candy’ pulled me in and kept me entertained from the first page to the last.
Cole is a witch with a pretty unique magical ability: that of being able to see and break curses. He didn’t even think he had any magic until later in life, so he became a candy maker as a backup to earning a living. Now he combines both, and I loved his “slightly magical” candies for the treatment of certain symptoms. Cole is very sweet, but he has no idea what true love is supposed to look like, and he is afraid of encountering it – since he has no idea what to do when he does.
Leo wasn’t even aware of the supernatural world until his boyfriend turned out to be a vampire – and a jealous one at that. Their relationship did not end well, and now Leo can’t find a new boyfriend because of a curse. He wants Cole to help him, but – ironically – magic stands in their way. There are lots of hints that there may be more to it as well, but I am not going to give away what that is. I think it’s well worth finding out for yourself!
If you enjoy magic woven into an otherwise pretty much “normal” everyday world, if you think that two strangers can make a go of it never mind what obstacles they face, and if you’re looking for an entertaining read with many fantastic secondary characters, lots of quirky humor, and some very hot loving, then you will probably like this novel.
