What will it take for a dragon prince to defy his father and fly on his own?

Prince Jules, the least favorite of the Dragon King's children, lives simply, banished to his rooms and the amazing adventures found in his books. He has never left the palace or shifted into his dragon form…he's never done anything.

Dragon shifter Lem is assigned to Jules as the prince's new bodyguard, and is determined to keep Jules safe from the Graithen, who killed the prince’s previous guardian. Lem grows to hate how the King hides Jules away, and longs to show him how to fly. His love for Jules also grows but it is forbidden, like so much in Jules' life.

When the Graithen attack again, though, everything changes.

Book Review

Dragons and dragon shifters have a special place in my heart, and reading the blurb for ‘Healing Fires’ to see that it involves a dragon prince as well made me look forward to finding out more. I am happy to report that I was not disappointed. This story has it all: dragon shifters, a prince looking to find his purpose in life, magic, and a great revelation about what was really going on for Prince Jules to be banished to his rooms and forbidden to ever take his dragon form.

Prince Jules does not lead a normal life. Nobody wants to talk to him or visit him, and he is basically grounded – for life. He has never left his rooms, and the only companions he has are his books and his bodyguard. But when an old enemy attacks and his bodyguard dies, everything changes for Jules. His new bodyguard, Lem, is very different form the older warrior Jules was used to. If anything, Lem is even more protective, but he is also more interested in Jules and more determined for him to have a normal life. Jules isn’t sure he is ready to go out in the world and allow himself to shift, but he trusts Lem implicitly, and when there is no other choice, he ends up following Lem into the unknown.

Lem is a simple warrior, or so he thinks. He is also a very special man/shifter, and it becomes quite clear to him that Jules needs help. Lem is not eager to break any rule, but he also sees how they suppress Jules and in the end, it is more important for Lem to be there for Jules than it is to obey some obscure laws. And when push comes to shove and there is another attack, Lem does not hesitate to save Jules from death or worse. Building a new life for his prince and himself is something he enjoys a lot more than being a simple bodyguard.

The relationship that develops between these two men is filled with love, but the magic thy make has much wider implications than the ever suspected. Jules and Lem have to figure out a lot of things for themselves, but they are definitely up for the task. Exploring each other’s bodies is anything but a hardship.

If you like dragons and magic, if two men struggling to define their purpose in life are your thing, and if you’re looking for a read that is as full of mystery, magic, and discoveries as it is touching and hot, then you will probably like this novella.
