Book Blurb

Sarcastic cop Theo Hsu returns home to Hawai‘i after realizing he wants more from his life, and also, less. He hopes to reconnect with his past and make amends with his mother, who remarried a cool, distant man, leaving Theo unsure where he stands.

It doesn’t take him long to figure out where he wants to stand, though: right next to his childhood best friend, tattooed detective Koa Palapiti. Theo would like to upgrade their relationship, but Koa is putting out some seriously mixed signals. It’s a mystery Theo can’t let go, but just as they start to connect, kidnapping, murder, and a deadly game with international stakes get in the way. Koa wants to keep Theo out of it, and if it comes to a choice between him and Koa’s partner, Freddie Ortiz, Theo doesn’t like his chances.

But even if Koa wants to push him out of the investigation, and his life, Theo still has a few tricks up his sleeve. It’ll take all his special gifts, ingenuity, risk-taking, family ties—and even some kinky undercover work—to save the day… and the man he never should’ve let get away.

Book Review

After the first book in this series, where the idea of a “plummet” as a planned event rather than a coincidence “organized” by Fate was introduced, this second book focuses on one of the “plummet” attendees and his decision to begin a new life based on the principles he learned during the workshop. Since that event consisted of all participants asking questions that were supposed to help them find life’s most important answers, without any structure at all and the leader of the sessions as clueless as everyone else, I was rather impressed to find that Theo actually made some real changes to his life. This novel is as full of humorous observations about human nature as the first, and the results is as filled with adventure as it is delightful.

Theo has been secretly in love with his childhood friend, Koa, for a very long time. When he runs into him again, he is more certain than ever that he wants to be more than friends – but there are a few obstacles. Koa’s attitude for one, then there is Koa’s partner, and as for the kidnapping, murder and other mayhem? I was afraid these guys would never get together! However, Theo is more determined and far more creative than I gave him credit for… and his shenanigans and maneuvers didn’t just entertain me, they prove to be pretty effective!

If you like childhood friends becoming lovers in very complicated circumstances, if you think that a romance can be as suspense-filled as a mystery, and if you’re looking for an action-packed read that is occasionally hilarious, full of twists and turns, and filled with revealing observations about human behavior, you will probably like this novel.
