Vampire fledgling Silas looked forward to spending eternity with his sire and master of his heart—until human hunters shattered that dream. Taken captive and tortured, Silas loses all hope. He begins to crave death when a rampaging werewolf saves his life.
Dominant werewolf Harley Jameson is usually the kind of guy who stays out of trouble. Despite being a member of the vicious Darkfall Mountain pack, Harley wants to live an ordinary life. Normal flew out the window the moment his wolf scented the injured vampire. A bloodsucker isn’t a werewolf’s ideal mate, but Silas brings all of Harley’s territorial instincts to the surface. Alone and cornered, Harley and Silas must take on the greatest fight of their lives. Can they survive long enough see if the sparks between them are real, and if they have a future together?
I enjoyed the world that Fel Fern created in her 'Darkfall Mountain Pack' series so I was looking forward to this second installment. The introduction of a vampire intrigued me as I was curious to see how the author would handle it. As I'm sure you can guess, world building is a fascination of mine. *grins*
I felt so sorry for Silas. His Master, Lucius, saved him as a fifteen-year-old homeless dropout, addicted to drugs, from a beating by Silas's dealer. Lucius brought him in to his home and trained him as his apprentice, gave him a home and a purpose. The best night of Silas's life, when Lucius transforms him, becomes his worst when hunters from the Order of the Knife break in and murder his Master. Lucius gives his own life to save Silas and Silas wakes up captured by the hunters, trussed up in silver and hanging from chains. Imagine his surprise when a werewolf, Harley, kills the hunters and rescues him.
Harley doesn't understand why his wolf pulls him to this barn outside the Darkfall territory until he sees and smells Silas. Harley has no clue why he ended up with a vampire as a mate. A vampire who has been recently turned and hasn't fed yet. Silas and Harley discover, from Sergio the pack alpha, that Lucius was the guardian of the Chalice of Rosewood, and had planned to impart all his knowledge and duties to Silas. It seems the chalice is hidden on Darkfall land and the Order is coming for it and Silas.
I liked this novella even though the ending was a little too 'Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade'. Silas and Harley are good characters but I wished it was longer as I definitely think more could have been developed with the story line and the characters. I'm definitely still curious about what's coming next.
