In the short story “Genuine Leather Interior,” Kyle Reston, a parking valet, is “working his way through college and not looking at parking cars as a career choice.” He falls in love with Aaron Gallagher’s “sexy, little, soft-top convertible” with its “supple, warm, erotic” leather interior. He also falls for Aaron and imagines them having sex in the car.

 

The story challenges the reader to ask if this is a sweet “sugar-daddy” tale. I refuse to agree with that. I also wonder why I should care if it is.

 

These two guys like one another. The one can obviously help the other. The other can obviously not resist being helped, having been seduced by his benefactor’s open interest, physical appeal, remarkable confidence, and sexual skills.

 

My (the reader’s) falling in love with Kyle and Aaron is the seduction this author seeks—and achieves.
