Book Review

There are a lot of things people will do "for love and money", and this story is a fun illustration of this truth. Deon starts out getting close to horses for the money he'll get if he makes a commercial with horses, but he ends up doing a lot more because of the love he has for Truck. What I liked is that, in this case at least, love is an even more powerful motivator than money. Yay for romance!

Deon may be a famous football player and looks like he has it all, but he has a secret. Actually, he has two. One is his phobia about horses, which he is forced to confront, and the second one is his love for Truck, which he ends up facing so that he is at least ready to come out if he gets caught. I liked that this story explores the fears of a big, bad football player, showing that he is just as human as the rest of us. Like Truck says in the story, phobias aren't rational, so the only thing you can do is either accept them or confront their source. Deon has the courage to confront his fear of horses, and as a result, manages to start dealing with his fear of people discovering he is gay. I loved that!

Truck is a big animal vet and has been friends with Deon for a long time. He also loves the man but never hoped he'd actually get to spend time with him openly. As Truck gets Deon used to the two horses he keeps in his barn, he doesn’t expect more than one of their rare encounters in the bedroom afterwards. What he ends up getting is a challenge to conquer his fear of flying and a promise of something he never thought possible.

If you like stories about men who conquer their fears, if you enjoy reading about the effect horses can have on the men who love them as well as on the men who are afraid of them, and if you're looking for a short, hot read with a sweet ending, then you will probably enjoy this short story.
