Not every superhero needs a cape!

Hello. My name is James and I’ve just recovered from a break-up with the awful Gareth, who left me for a man who has nipples the size of cigar stubs. How’s that for a bash to my self-esteem? Gareth did me a favor, though, and now it’s time to go after the man I really love, but first I need to crash out of my morose shell and go clubbing.

After I bump into my crush—ahem, neighbor—Ronnie, and find myself babbling stupid things while ogling him as he stands in his doorway wrapped in nothing but a towel, I begin to wonder whether true love will ever come my way if I keep acting so amateurish in the relationship department. But Ronnie accepts my invitation to join me at the club, and what happens afterward both amazes and freaks me the hell out. The man of my dreams is like no other, and he might well need me as his sidekick in the future if things keep going the way they are.

With a nasty thug to deal with and a robber stealing a woman’s handbag, Ronnie has to let his inner force free and right the wrongs. Can I handle this new life? And, more to the point, can Ronnie? Who needs a cape and a mask when Ronnie has power at his fingertips and a brilliant ability to whisk us here, there and everywhere so we’re flying with the stars?

Book Review

Superheroes are a special favorite of mine, but to see one of their stories told from the point of view of the “sidekick” as well as the superhero himself, is a special treat. Especially when the story starts out from said sidekick’s perspective, since it enables me to get to know the special powers that are in play from someone who is as unfamiliar with them as the sidekick is. In this case it is James who finds out that his crush and neighbor, Ronnie, has a few more abilities than expected…

James is a bit of a drama queen and a self-declared diva, has just survived a major breakup, and finally decides to jump back into the clubbing scene two months later. He has a lot of self-esteem issues, self-doubts out the wazoo, and some real trouble talking himself into dealing with being dumped. I was a bit worried about his mental stability with the breakup still very much top of his mind, but, as it turns out, this time James seems to be falling for the right guy. Not that James does this with any sort of plan in mind, but I found his slightly bumbling uncertainty and major clumsiness very charming. And the sense of humor, which rings through in the way he tells his story, is hilarious.

Ronnie starts out as James’s neighbor, and it turns out he has a crush on James as well, but is waiting for James to get over his latest ex. Ronnie knows some “weird stuff” happens when he bites his lips and that men usually run once that happens. Once Ronnie follows James to the club and they begin to get together, more inexplicable things happen – and ones that frighten even Ronnie at first.

Clearly there is something more going on between James and Ronnie than the start of a romance. I really liked the mystery of what it was, and watching them figure it out was a lot of fun. And while they don’t take the “superhero stuff” all too seriously, I’m sure they’ll figure it out eventually. After all they are very much suited as a couple, and look like they’ll stay together to work on their relationship as well as everything else.

If you like superheroes who are only just discovering what they can do, if you enjoy two sort-of-shy and somewhat clumsy men who get together despite a few obstacles, and if you’re looking for a very entertaining read with some hot action on top of a fun adventure with superpowers, then you might like this short story.
