When the emperor has his father killed, it's the breaking point for Haruo, who sets out from the island of dragon shifters where he lives in search of revenge. The tournament being held to marry off the emperor's son seems like a perfect opportunity—what better way to get close to the father than through the son, after all.
Short and to the point, this story still manages to have a few unexpected twists, an interesting setting, and even though the world did not have many details, I was able to get into the spirit of what was happening. Imagine a culture inspired by Japan around the 17th or 18th century, add some mysterious spirits with their own agenda, and dragon shifters who are in charge of keeping the land healthy and things running smoothly. Except they are anything but… and as the details emerge, it becomes clear that something is very wrong.
Haruo is tasked with assassinating the emperor who is slowly killing them off, but he has vey little effective training. He tries to make up for it with sheer bravado and determination, but his chances are slim. Of course, since the story is told from his point of view, it all sounds better than it is, but as I found out more about him and his equally desperate cousin, I realized how woefully unprepared Haruo was. Luckily there is more than one surprise that works in his favor…
If you like mysterious adventures with a few revelations, and if you’re looking for an entertaining read with a mix of darkness, magic, and an unexpected outcome, then you might like this novella. It is more of a sketch than an oil painting, so to speak, but that might be just what you’re looking for.
