Book Blurb

The truth might ruin his dreams—or make them come true.

When Zane moves into an old gothic brownstone, he discovers the house comes equipped with a caretaker—Kit, who lives in the basement. Zane is immediately drawn to the charming and attractive Kit. But Kit is much more than he seems. He is a two-hundred-year-old half-human, half–red-fox spirit who guards a Gate between the mortal and spirit worlds—a fact Zane should recognize, but doesn’t.

Orphaned at a young age, Zane never learned he comes from a long line of mystical Keepers. Kit needs Zane’s help to protect the Gate, but how can he tell Zane of his legacy when that will crush Zane’s dreams of traveling the world? If he takes up the mantle, Zane will be bound to the Gate, unable to leave it. But when Zane realizes Kit’s true nature, and his own, he’ll have to make a choice—fight to protect Kit and the Gate, or deny his destiny and any chance of a future with Kit.

Book Review

“Trust in dreams, for in them is hidden the gate to eternity.” ~  Khalil Gibran

It took him five years, but Zane finally decides to move to Chicago from North Carolina, where his cousin Ralph has left him a huge Brownstone. So far Zane's life hasn't gone too well, so he feels that he doesn't have anything to lose. Zane could never imagine how his life is going to change.

On his way to the house, Zane is almost run over several times, and he is exhausted when he arrives. The next morning, he is awoken by wonderful smells and follows his nose to the kitchen where he meets Kit, the live-in caretaker. Kit is a welcome surprise; Zane thinks Kit is strange, but adorable. As they spend more time together, Zane realizes that he enjoys having Kit around for more than his delicious cooking. Zane has a difficult time letting Kit do so much for him and, as much as possible, includes Kit in a way that Ralph never has.

Kit assumes that his cousin, Ralph, told Zane about the role he is to play, but the longer Kit is with Zane, the more convinced Kit is that Zane seriously does not know anything about it. Unfortunately, Kit has to lie to Zane by hiding the magic Kit uses. Kit knows he should tell Zane, since he doesn't know about being the gatekeeper, but is afraid Zane will not believe him, freak out, and leave. That would be a disaster in so many ways! Kit needs him there. He has tried to maintain the balance required to keep things on an even keel, but with no keeper for the last five years, Kit is worn out. The thought does cross his mind that maybe he's wrong about Zane but he quickly dismisses the idea. Kit needs Zane to take over. Being wrong is just not an option. As he listens to Zane's hopes and dreams of traveling the world, he feels guilty because Kit realizes that when Zane becomes the gatekeeper, he will not be able to fulfill them.

Shira has created an enjoyable tale with amazingly different characters. I love Kit, his magic, sincerity, and warm heart. Kit took on the guardian's duties, even though he knew it would weaken him. It was a testament to his dedication and selflessness. Zane was different yet he had a big heart. He and Kit are adorable together. The ending was exciting and unexpected; there were lots of turns and twists and fights with good versus evil, but Zane and Kit learn to work together to remedy the problems. This story is different from what I usually read, but I knew that if Shira wrote it, chances are she could win me over and, of course, she did. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this magical adventure. Thanks, Shira!
