Book Blurb

Forbidden love and the risk of execution dance together, a dangerous waltz of passion and terror. When the nightmare comes true for the ambassador, the king must use every bit of his cunning and wit or they will both face the sword.

The king and the ambassador first appeared in my last year's Charity Sip, Slow Awakening.

Book Review

I read this story twice and enjoyed it more with each reading. I had no idea that it was the second “sip” of a pair, apparently the author submitted its prequel at last year’s Charity Sip event (see review here). You need not read the first to delight in this tale. The reason I read it twice was because of the rich wealth of detail that set up the story. The author’s descriptions of the countryside, the castle and its people were sumptuous and gave me a brilliant view of the environment and the atmosphere of quiet fear. I especially loved the use of the colored clothing each “side” wore as it compounded the emotional depth of the tale.

As one king rides to a castle anticipating a romantic interlude with his lover, the ambassador of another king, he senses something is amiss and that it may not be romance that awaits him this night.

What unfolds is an extraordinary imagining of how persecution of gay individuals may have taken place in the time of kings and castles. Arresting in its telling and chilling in its depth of possibility, I loved this story. It was like a succulent sweet plum with the bitterest of pits, and yet that pit becomes the seed to a yet sweeter plum, that of liberation.

Thank you, M. Raiya, for this lovely tale of persecution and perseverance.
