A love worth fighting for—tooth and claw.
Solitary vampire Fallon Underwood gets all the social interaction he needs being the silent partner at the Dead and Breakfast B and B high in the Colorado mountains. Change is hard for Fallon, so when his business partner, Tanner, suggests hiring a new manager for the inn, he’s adamant that they don’t need help, especially not in the form of bouncy werecat Carter Hughes.
Carter is a happy-go-lucky kitty, and he loves the hospitality industry, so the D and B ought to be a great place for him. He falls for Fallon as soon as he picks up one of Fallon’s novels, and soon he begins to woo the vamp with gifts. When Fallon finally succumbs to Carter’s feline charms, the results are unexpected, to say the least. Their mating will have irreversible consequences—for their bodies and their hearts.

From the very start, I was pretty sure that I was going to enjoy the heck out of this book. I mean – what could be more perfect than a title like ‘Fangs and Catnip’ for the romance between a vampire and a werecat? And the setting of an inn where the name reflects the owner’s status – dead? Plus the character descriptions promised the kind of opposites-attract-story that is bound to be entertaining while being loaded with emotions. Add in a twist about the way matings work in this paranormal world and, as far as I am concerned, this novel delivered!
Fallon is an intriguing vampire, to say the least. He is a successful author of thrillers, likes his quiet life, and dealing with the occasional management issue of the inn he is involved in as a silent partner is about the limit of his social skills. Fallon’s lack of willingness to interact with others means he is reluctant to have anything to do with Carter but he is intrigued.
Carter is a bouncy werecat who loves life and says pretty much exactly what he thinks. He is not easy to intimidate and while he has never particularly liked vampires before, Fallon fascinates him. His cat knows Fallon is their mate so Carter goes after Fallon the best way he knows how. His little presents are fun, and I admired his stubbornness in the face of Fallon rebuffing him repeatedly.
While the secondary characters, including the guests, are fantastic and added a lot of color to this story, I have to say that Carter and Fallon were the guys who stole the show. That is probably as it should be, considering this is their story, and the way they struggle with their mating once strange symptoms show up was painful. To me it was quite obvious what was going on, but Carter and Fallon took a little longer to get the message. It made for a great reconciliation though.
If you like the complications that come with an interspecies mating, if you want to see two men deal with seemingly irreconcilable differences in habits and temperaments, and if you’re looking for an entertaining read that is as funny as it is gripping, then you will probably like this novel as much as I do. I hope there will be more tales set in the Dead & Breakfast very soon!
