Evan Finch was born into a superhero legacy. Being able to communicate with birds isn't the most glamorous power -- he's no Moltenman -- but at least he can fly. By day he works as a graphic designer, but at night he takes to the streets as The Augur, using his abilities and his enchanted lituus staff to keep his part of New York as safe. That's no small feat when he's dealing with territorial cops, feather-brained backup, and trigger-happy muggers. His greatest challenge, though, is the enigmatic villain Nightmare. Nightmare takes pleasure in upstaging Evan at every turn -- and in a growing obsession with Evan, if the odd packages showing up at his apartment are any indication.
This story is also included in Exchange of Power Anthology.
In a fun and sometimes surprising excursion into the world of superheroes, ‘Ex Diris’ stars an augur and his archnemesis by the name of Nightmare. An augur is a “diviner by birds”, and Evan in this story has taken this a step further with a superpower of flying and using birds to help him. I thought that was a pretty unusual and neat idea, but it gets better. Evan is not at all your “average” superhero, and neither is his enemy Nightmare – and as for their relationship? You’ve got to read this story to believe it! I was entertained, interested in how this one played out, and loved every twist and turn.
Evan can best be described as an “everyday superhero”. He is a man with personal issues, pains and aches once he takes off his suit, and worse than that, he questions the very foundation of what he does. With an enemy like the evil Nightmare, I can’t say I blame him. But once all of that was established, the whole story shifted in a more unexpected direction, and by the time I got to the end, it was clear that this is not at all your run-of-the-mill superhero story. I enjoyed that immensely!
If you like superheroes of the unusual kind, if you enjoy surprises in your stories, and if you’re looking for a fun read with a touch of serious power exchange, then you will probably like this short story.
