Khafra has spent more than three thousand years wandering the Earth, fascinated by humanity and its many rises and falls. When he meets a young student at Cambridge, he is utterly unprepared for the effect Alfie has on him. Eager and open and full of wonder, Alfie is perhaps the perfect submissive.
While the sex is spectacular, the real surprise for Khafra is his growing love for Alfie. Such unions are grand while they last, but inevitably doomed to time and mortality. Can he open his heart one more time, for a beautiful young man whose defiance of custom and courage in the face of danger are so captivating? Or will he continue as he has for so long, living on the fringe?
Everything depends on the outcome of Epiphany.
A vampire holiday party, this one set in Victorian England and happening on Epiphany (celebrated January 6), is at the center of this creative paranormal tale that stars Khaled, a three-thousand-year-old vampire hailing from Egyptian times, and Alfie, a young English nobleman. Khaled and Alfie are very well suited for each other, since Alfie is a sub by nature and loves to be dominated by Khaled. And while Alfie’s human father is easily enough fooled into having Alfie travel with Khaled “for his education”, Khaled’s fellow vampires are a tougher audience to convince that the two of them belong together.
I had to grin when it emerged that, in this world, vampire society, in its own way, is even more restrictive than Victorian society. There are rules and regulations and bylaws to adhere to that would make any Victorians who ever found out pale with envy. It makes sense though – vampires have had thousands of undisturbed years to develop a society more intricate than any humans have come up with – so far. Alfie needs to be “introduced” to them for his own protection - Khaled wants him as a partner/lover and needs to ensure other vampires don’t see him as food.
Things don’t go as expected, and I was quite surprised about the twist. As even older rules were brought to bear on the situation, suspense took over and made me hope for a happy ending that had seemed so certain just pages earlier. Well done, L.A. Stockman!
If you like vampires who live in a world with a history and rules all their own, if you think an ancient vampire and a cute, curious, joyfully submissive young nobleman are a good match, and if you’re looking for a read full of surprises, suspense, and some very hot bedroom activities, then you will probably like this short story.
