Book Review

Now that I’m back in this series, with its various werewolves, wizards, and other supernatural and magical creatures, I am thoroughly enjoying the surprises Amber Kell has ready at every turn. In this fourth volume she deals with the “art” of necromancy, and the way she did it was a little unusual. Elijah’s ability to see ghosts is different from the way most people, even other necromancers. Perceive them, and that leads to a few surprises. Devin is the second of the three triplets who turns his attention to a relationship of a more permanent kind, and he definitely has his hands full trying to understand and come close to Elijah. There are some evil plans afoot, lots of new magic to delve into, and the combination definitely had me turning the pages.

Elijah, or Eli as he prefers to be called, has not had an easy childhood. Ignored, if not despised, by his father, taunted by his more talented brother, all Eli wants is a degree and some sort of job so he can get away from his awful relatives. He is more shocked than anyone when he discovers he can see ghosts, and the way it happened was imaginative and a great scene. From then on, Eli faces surprise after surprise, has to deal with his father’s sudden interest, and makes some powerful enemies. Necromancy is a rare enough magical ability in this world that everyone suddenly wants a piece of Eli, but all Eli wants is to be left alone – and to steal another kiss from Devin.

Devin has been interested in Eli all along, but when the shy wizard’s rare talent surfaces, Devin is determined to protect him – among other things. He wants to take things slow, can’t believe he feels ready for a permanent relationship, and makes a few mistakes along the way. His idea of protecting Eli turns out to be more difficult than he expected, but determination and his brothers’ support go a long way in helping Devin deal when things turn sour.

If you like stories about wizards who think of themselves as weak, then discover they have a very sought-after talent, if you enjoy reading about men who need to figure out how to relate in the face of danger and those who want to keep them apart, and if you're looking for an entertaining read with lots of supernatural surprises and some pretty hot wizard-on-wizard action, then you will probably like this novella.
