Book Blurb

Getting abducted by slavers wasn't part of the plan. Not that there was much of a plan to begin with, but it definitely involved more payment and fewer chains. Ashe can't help but feel a bit of panic when the meeting to sell dragon eggs, which were hunted down weeks earlier, turns sour, and he ends up drugged, caged, and on his way to a land where elves are pets.

To make matters worse, the only person who has a chance of saving him is Katsu. Katsu, who after two weeks of sex is still an enigma. Katsu, who isn't exactly the best combatant on the team. Ashe can only hope that this enigma might still have a few tricks up his sleeve, or Ashe's fate is sealed.

Book Review

The second installment of Ashe and Katsu's story (which really needs to be read in sequence) begins to deal with some of the issues that occur when two complete strangers, of different species, fall in lust. The elf and the human may have fun when they share their tent at night, but there is more to a relationship than sleeping together.

At least that is the case for Ashe. He is the far more open one of the men; he likes to talk, wants to know what Katsu is thinking, and has a hard time understanding if his taciturn lover really likes him or just wants him as a – 'bedwarmer'. His irrepressible nature suffers a severe blow in this story, when he gets kidnapped, and it was interesting to see him deal with the situation. Ashe is a fighter, though, and he doesn’t easily give up.

Katsu is quiet, self-sufficient and seems to hate human contact. He carries some deep secrets though and what I got to see in this story, as he rushes to free Ashe, made me understand why he may be a bit hesitant to open up. When he does, because he cannot let Ashe turn away from him, it becomes obvious why he is careful about sharing his secrets.

This story is definitely a turn toward the more serious aspects of a beginning relationship. Both Ashe and Katsu deal with the issues in their own way, but it becomes obvious that there is more between these two than lust. What, exactly, remains to be seen, but that, I suspect, is for the next few volumes to reveal…  If you like fantasy, if you're looking for an adventure story about faraway lands and different cultures, and if you enjoy watching two men 'battle out' the way they relate to each other, then you will probably like this short story.
