Aqua and Rios are bored, which is always a recipe for disaster. Going on a trip might not solve the cause of the boredom, but they know it will distract them for a while. Except, Rios runs into a nix trying to save his river from drug smugglers and Aqua is kidnapped by a bunch of angry fire salamanders. Their fun adventure quickly turns into a desperate fight for survival, and they’re not certain they’ll be able get back home ever again.
First edition published by Less Than Three Press, May 2017.
Ah, the Supernatural Consultant’s world of dragons, half gods, and magic continues – albeit in a short story this time and about four years after the end of ‘Dragon Soldier’. And, what I found really interesting, from the point of view of some new dragon shifters who come over to visit Mercury and Dane’s motley family of previous books’ fame.
The story begins with Aqua and Rio, two mischievous fifteen-year-old water dragons, going on a trip and encountering a few unexpected obstacles like, oh, the Niagara Falls. That did make me chuckle. I mean, they’re not exactly a small thing that is easily overlooked when looking at a map and planning a trip from Ontario, where they are, to Massachusetts, where Nickel lives, right? Being water dragons, it makes sense for them to travel via rivers and lakes, but their inexperience really shows. Rios and Aqua’s naughtiness and fun banter, as well as their delightful naivete did pull me into their world rather quickly.
As soon as they figure out that the trip is much longer than they thought and they have to stop for the night, their true adventure starts. Rios makes a new friend, a water nix whom Rios names Nixie, who might just be Rios’s mate. But there are drug smugglers, Nixie’s mission to keep the river safe, and the Coast Guard intervening before Rios and Nixie can figure out what’s next for them.
If you love mischievous youngsters getting into trouble and a grand adventure, if you want to see a water dragon find a purpose for his life at the side of a nix, and if you’re looking for an entertaining read with just a touch of platonic romance, then you will probably like this short story.
