Little Boy Lost is the story of Jamie Mayfield, a golden-haired fallen angel. Dumped into a gay rehab center and shunned by his parents, the once-adored son of small-minded, small town people has had to find his own way in life.
Jamie is astonished and dismayed when Brian McAllister, the boy he knows is the other half of his soul, explodes back into his precarious life. In the nearly two years they’ve been apart, not a day has gone by that Jamie hasn’t thought of Brian, no matter how hard surviving has been. How can Jamie protect Brian from the pain and brutalization in his life when he can’t even protect himself? Brian and Jamie will put every bit of themselves into saving each other, but Steven O’Dell isn’t the only obstacle keeping the boys apart. Jamie’s own self-hatred may prove to be their undoing.
First edition published by Dreamspinner Press, October 2011.
The fourth volume in this series is even more heart wrenching than the first three, but in a very different way. I was both surprised and delighted to find that Jamie’s voice takes over. Where we have so far followed Brian, this is the first time we see things from Jamie’s point of view. And, at this point in his life, it is not a pretty picture. The emotions get more intense, the stakes higher and the tension almost made me snap with this installment. I am in awe of J.P.’s ability to come up with surprises around every single corner.
Jamie is so lost and desperate, and yet he still tries to protect Brian. It is amazing that he can still be so in love, even after all he has been through. Neither his parents’ rejection nor the Sunshine Center (what a horribly misleading name for such a cruel place) subdued his spirit, but the practicalities of life, once he left, have taken him prisoner. No longer able to believe in himself, Jamie has given up. When Brian finds him, he is so deeply miserable and dependent on his pimp and the drugs that he cannot even conceive of a different life. It takes him quite a while to ‘wake up’, and that journey is heartbreaking for all concerned.
If you like raw emotions, situations that are so close to reality you get uncomfortable just thinking about how many people have to suffer through the type of situations portrayed in this book, you will love this book. I adore this series as much for the fascinating story it tells about Brian and Jamie, whom I love as though they were real people, as I love it for the emotions it lets me see, the experiences it makes me participate in and the absolute roller coaster wildness of their adventures. If you think you can deal with all this – give this series a go.
