Happiness. Love. Desire.
Murder.
Former homicide detective Erin McKenzie couldn’t be any happier with her new life and her fiancée Elizabeth Adams—until the not so distant past comes knocking at the door. Erin’s former colleague Detective Patricia Henderson—a woman both she and Liz have intimate ties to—shows up with a fresh crime scene photo that looks all too familiar. The victim is an actor who works for Liz’s movie production company, and Liz had argued with the young man on more than one occasion.
Erin can’t believe it’s happening again. The new murder resurrects old questions, and when Liz all but sends her packing, Erin can’t help but wonder what her lover is hiding. Lost, alone, and frightened, Erin is once again caught in midst of it all, and no matter how hard she fights it, she’s where she never thought she’d be…deeper.
'Deeper' is a sequel to 'In Too Deep'. Most of the characters that made it out alive of the first book are back for the second book with a few intriguing new folks. This book is a bit darker with some very intense and sad traumatic goings-on. More men have been murdered with the same calling card of multiple post mortem genital mutilations and a hand drawn crucifix. One of the main gals in “Deeper” is once again thought to be the murderer. During most of the story things are not all roses and chocolates for Liz or her dearest love, Erin. A tense yet amusing subplot has the Corona County sheriff’s staff facing off against the Valle Luna police where detectives from each group are jockeying for position. Solving this case will be a major plus for one of these departments, possibly both if they learn to work together. Intertwined with all the blood and guts are some really hot explosive sexual encounters, tender moments by several couples, and some impressive artistic accomplishments originating with someone from each police community. It would beneficial to have read “Deeper” before delving into this book so the established people, places, undercurrents, and nuances are available right from the start.
Liz is more impressive plus shows a larger range of emotions and vulnerabilities this time round. Her family history gets some quality airtime and it definitely helped me to understand Liz. I was rather impressed at how vulnerable, volatile, and finally willing to see and act on her need for her lover this time round. I wish her lawyer and her love could have convinced her sooner not to go it alone. Liz is truly a larger than life character and I flat out adored her!
Erin is a much weaker character initially than I remembered her from ‘Deeper’, except when it comes to her love and protective nature for Liz. Her change was the one hardest for me to absorb and personally come to terms with. Then she really shines big time as the story progresses and I let go of my earlier preconceptions. Isn’t it fantastic that a story can maneuver me like that? In retrospect, I was blown away. Erin doesn’t disappoint in her incredible tenacity to find things out and unequivocally stand by her lover, even in the truly sticky hard times. I just loved Erin, this time round by the story's completion!
This book was a tad disturbing for me to read, but it actually made me read faster to find out how everything worked out. I sure got to the wonderful good parts faster, too. Unless being disturbed is a total turn off for you, this book is FANTASTIC! Don’t miss it; I definitely recommend it!
