How can you trust the man who tried to kill you?
Undercover cop Deacon Shepherd lost everything trying to maintain his cover - the man he loved and the future he craved. He walked away and never looked back because it was the only way to keep Rafael alive.
The last thing he needs is to be dragged back in that world, but an attempt on Rafael's life is enough to make him risk his heart again.
Rafael 'Rafe' Ramirez wakes up in the hospital, the victim of a hit and run. He’s horrified when the first face he sees is that of the man who betrayed him and left him for dead three years before. Witness protection had stripped Rafe of his family and friends, and now it seems his sacrifice to bring his Uncle to justice was for nothing.
Someone wants Rafe dead, and the only way he can stay alive is to go with the murdering drug dealer who broke his heart. But how can he ever trust Deacon, and how can Deacon protect Rafe without falling in love all over again?
‘Deacon’s Law' is the third book in a suspense-filled series full of murderous crooks and the heroes who fight them. This volume focuses on Deacon, Mac’s friend from the previous book, who is an experienced cop on an undercover assignment when his world goes to hell. He falls for Rafe, nephew of the gangster Deacon is trying to bring to justice, but has to pretend to kill him in order to maintain cover. Three years later, an unexpected event puts Rafe in renewed mortal danger – only the stakes are ten times higher than ever before, danger lurks around every corner, and while Deacon comes to his rescue, how is Rafe ever going to be able to trust him again? Talk about a relationship with history to overcome!
Deacon is an ex-cop who thinks that he lost any chance at love three years earlier – because of his own decision to focus on getting the bad guy rather than following his heart. I can see why he did it – it was the morally right thing to do – but it has cost him more than he expected. But even though he sees Rafe again, things don’t look much better. In many ways they are worse, only this time, Deacon is going to do everything he can to keep Rafe safe. He hasn’t forgiven himself and doesn’t expect Rafe to believe or trust him, but that isn’t going to stop Deacon from doing the right thing for once.
Rafe is so determined to bring his uncle to justice that he takes one stupid risk after another. I felt for him, but he is totally out of his depth. And when he falls for Deacon, posing as Rafe’s uncle’s enforcer, things only get more muddled for Rafe. Of course he gets caught, barely survives, and ends up in witness protection with no way to get justice for his parents. It’s a coincidence that he even sees Deacon again – or so Rafe believes - after a hit-and-run that turns out to be not-so-coincidental. Suddenly Rafe’s only hope to survive is a man he still feels attracted to yet doesn’t think he can ever trust.
Rafe and Deacon try to act tough, but deep down, they are both hurting. Neither has managed to forget the other but meeting again doesn’t solve a thing. Second chances are great, but I have rarely seen one that is as hard-earned as Rafe and Deacon’s new lease on life and love. In fact it takes a whole bunch of other people to help and support them before they can get to the heat of the matter: their love for each other and how to deal with left-over emotions that make it almost impossible for them to become a couple.
If you like suspenseful thrillers with evil gangsters who seem to have the upper hand – until they don’t, if two men who have given up all hope in ever being a couple sound like an exciting addition to all the action going down while they try to stay alive, and if you’re looking for an action-packed, emotionally charged read that is so intense you might bite your nails, then you will probably like this novel. I was unable to put it down!
