As the pieces of their case come together, one piece of his family is coming apart—and it’s Wicked painful to watch.

Will this be the brothers’ darkest night?

Book Review

This book picks up the story where the last one left off with Zack and Travis having been buried and Marcus and Ben determined to find his killers. There are some happy reconciliations in the family, i.e., Marcus and his brother, Frankie and Chase and his lover, Rob. As if there weren't enough to worry about with a killer on the loose, Wick has left town with Ned and has shut everyone else out, leaving the rest of the family hurt and confused by his behavior. They need their brother to help them and he's not there.

Marcus endeared himself to me even more in this story, not just for his love and dedication to Ben, but because of his big heart and amazing sense of right and wrong. No only does he treat Ben like an angel, he has a great deal of compassion for his family and the kids on the streets. He wishes he could save them all, but knows he can't, so he focuses this time on a young man named Brady who has been on the streets for years and is an excellent confidential informant for Marcus, providing him with invaluable information. Bit by bit, I got to know Marcus and realize what a big teddy bear he is as opposed to the rough, tough ex-cop I saw at the beginning of the series. Marcus does everything with his whole heart and his feelings run deep. He and Ben are at the point in their relationship where even though it's painful, total disclosure is necessary. Marcus explains, as previously promised, his history with Wick. Although Ben is not happy about it, he finally understands how Wick fits into Marcus's life and why they are brothers.

Although still plagued with anxiety attacks from traumatic events in his past, Ben is really coming into his own. He's stronger and happier and so in love with Marcus that it hurts. Ben loves him enough to ignore Marcus's complaints and makes him take care of himself even when he may not want to. He's determined to keep Marcus around for a long time. I loved the banter between the two of them about the rules, i.e., what to eat, exercise, etc. Ben gets the same kind of care from Marcus when he's down, fighting the flashbacks from his PTSD due to his past. Marcus is always there, holding, comforting him, treating him like the treasure he is. It demonstrates just how far their relationship has come and gave me a glimpse of how far it will be able to go. Ben has gotten a lot of his self-confidence back, as he clearly demonstrates when he tells Wick off for hurting Marcus. Nothing is going to hurt Marcus ever again if he can help it and, as many times as Marcus has to be his knight, Bell will be safe too.

Another brilliantly written addition to Marcus and Ben's continuing adventures in love and in life. Tom's stories are epitomized emotions put into words, all of which never fail to touch my heart and make me yearn for more. If you've enjoyed the other sequels to the Pulp Friction series, you will love this one as well. To those of you who haven't yet read any of the series, I highly recommend it if you like love, passion, friendship, family, justice, suspense, and a story in which, at least sometimes, the good guy wins. Thanks, Tom, for another moving tale about the city knight.
