Book Blurb

Sheriff Ashton Rawling never expected to see Darius Lyall back in town. Five years ago, just as their friendship seemed poised to turn into something more, Darius fled the small northern town of Moon Lake under suspicion of murdering a local man who was found on Lyall property with his neck brutally snapped.

Now Darius has returned to celebrate the twenty-first birthday of his youngest brother, Serge. What Darius doesn’t reveal is that he, Serge, and the middle Lyall brother, Caleb, are all werewolves who use their forest cabin as a retreat where they can transform safely.

Unfortunately, the moment the two men confront each other, the old attraction sparks between them. Ash looks for a way to clear Darius of murder, even though he isn’t totally convinced of his lover’s innocence, while Darius must find a way to love Ash without accidentally tearing him limb from limb during the next full moon.

Book Review

This story is one of mystery and secrecy, and it pulled me in as I got to know Ash, the sheriff, and his former friend, Darius. The suspicion around Darius and the murder he allegedly committed five years earlier was quite compelling. Everything seemed to point at him as being the guilty man, yet there was an underlying feeling that I shared with Ash which told me it would be too easy if it had been Darius. No real evidence was forthcoming, though, so the suspense was definitely there.

Ash tries to do the right thing, and he wants to believe his friend is innocent, but he also wants to make sure everything is done by the book. This inner tension provides a source for lots of conflict, as does the fact he is undeniably drawn to Darius.

Darius is a total mystery, even though part of the story is told from his point of view. The fact that he isn’t quite human was pretty obvious from the start, and his attempts to hide it from Ash were somewhat amusing.

If you like shifter stories that are more about the human side of the werewolf trying to deal with things than the woolfy side, if a bit of mystery and detective work interests you, and if finding clues in what happens sounds like fun, you might like this novella.
