Book Blurb

What lurks in the dark is not always a monster. Sometimes it’s your deepest desire.

Long ago, Val made the decision to stick by his captain against mutinous shipmates. He has spent a millennium on Earth protecting humans as a matter of honor. He also made the fatal mistake of falling in love with a human boy who died trying to birth Val’s son. He’s sworn to never open himself up to such pain and guilt again.

Mackie was forced to run away from his family to save himself from their homophobia and abuse. He learned to live by his wits and the sale of his body. He’s reinvented himself as a brat with a need to be dominated and tamed. He thought he’d found the perfect man in Val, only to discover he had given his heart to a vampire—one that pushed him away when an ancient, hidden war reignited.

As Val and his cohorts battle with their old crew members, he tries to keep Mackie at a distance from the danger and his heart. But Mackie will not be sidelined as either a soldier or a lover. He is waging a war of his own to win Val back.

The next chapter in the alien war is heating up. A deadly drug is flooding Boston, threatening to turn the city into a battleground. Val and the others need help, and one bratty twink might be the best weapon they have. He may also be the key to unlocking Val’s heart and giving him back the happiness he lost.

Reader advisory: This book contains scenes of drug use and sexual abuse.

Book Review

This is the second story in the ‘Alien Blood Wars’ series, and things are heating up. The two factions – those who respect humans as sentient beings versus those who see humans as food at best and are after world domination – have been at war on and off over the past thousand years. They are a lot like vampires – minus the garlic and holy water issues, but they do have the strength, speed, arrogance, an ability to command humans, an extremely long lifespan, and they can and do live on blood of various kinds. From what happened in the previous book (which I strongly recommend you read first) it is clear that Dracul is up to no good again, and Alex and the roughly 50 percent of the crew who want to blend in and live in peace have their hands full dealing with him and his schemes.

Val is the second in command of the original crew and is still at his captain’s side – now as a bouncer in the nightclub they own and run in Boston. He is strong, honorable, and keeps to himself. Because he has loved and lost, even though it was centuries ago, he has decided to not ever fall in love again – especially with a fragile human. Except it became pretty clear in the last story that it is too late – he is deeply in love with Mackie and desperately trying to deny and hide it in a misguided attempt to keep Mackie safe from Dracul.

Mackie, of course, being the bratty sub he is, has other ideas. He has saved himself from his abusive, homophobic family and learned to take care of himself – mostly. Mackie has suffered a lot of heartache due to the way Val has treated him and even though he realizes that Val did it to keep him safe, it still hurts. But Mackie is self-aware enough to know he still loves Val and self-confident enough to know he can help in the fight against Dracul. How to make Val believe that while seducing him is less clear, but Mackie is determined enough for three men.

As the focus on the war between the two alien factions increases, there are a few more revelations about the past as well as Dracul and the aliens working with him. Not everyone in his circle is a voluntary supporter, and I am sure the internal conflict there will bring a few surprises in the next installment of this story. For now the war is being fought with an illegal drug, and figuring out how to stop it and the vicious effects it has on humans is half the battle.

Mackie and Val have their own battles to face, both inside and outside the playroom, and it did not look good for their relationship for the longest time. Val’s well-meaning but frankly idiotic attempts to keep Mackie safe are so thoroughly misguided that they lead to far more trouble than anyone could have imagined. Mackie’s attempts to become his own man are disastrous as well, and while I was pretty clear on the need for them to stick together as their only chance, it took them a whole lot longer to get the message.

If you like powerful aliens who can’t seem to avoid bringing humans into their war, if you want to find out how a young human sub deals with his alien Dom’s refusal to admit his feelings, and if you’re looking for a read that blends alien politics, killer drugs, and a scorching interspecies romance, then you will probably like this novel. I definitely await the next volume with great impatience.
