In the year 2152 the last of humanity lives on a series of generational spaceships. Twice a year, on the ship known as Alpha One, five scouts are chosen to head out into deep space and find places where Alpha One can re-stock its supplies.
Tobias Hark, newly qualified pilot, is one of those scouts but Tobias isn’t being sent on his mission alone. He has been paired with his commanding officer, Javier De Santos. Javier also happens to be the one man that Tobias has been crushing on ever since he joined the pilot unit. But there are rules on Alpha One and those rules mean that Tobias can never let his superior officer know how he feels.
Javier has been following those rules too, despite the fact that he has lusted after Tobias from the day they met. But when their ship lands on a strange planet, and they have to make some drastic decisions in order to survive, Javier soon realizes that if there is ever a time to break those rules it is now. Because protecting Tobias has just become his priority and the only way that Javier can do that is by crossing the line.
This story is set in a world over 135 years from now where humankind has managed to destroy Earth, built five generational spaceships to save the survivors, and is now looking for a new home planet. It is told from the point of view of two of the many pilots on Alpha One, five of whom are sent out on a regular basis to find new supplies, and to check if they can discover any planet able to support human life. Javier has done this a few times, is the pilot unit’s commanding officer, and is ten years older than Tobias, who faces his first mission. Initially they are both determined to stick to the rules - of nonfraternization – but as events unfold, “crossing the line” becomes not just attractive, but a necessity.
Tobias has had a crush on Javier from the first moment they met at the beginning of his training as a pilot, but, based on Javier’s gruff attitude, Tobias believes Javier doesn’t like him very much. Javier has felt lust for Tobias from the very beginning but is determined not to give in to temptation, and ends up keeping Tobias at more of a distance than any of the men he works with. I don’t think much would have changed if they’d never gone on a mission together – and that just goes to show that, sometimes, fate needs a little nudge for men to see what’s important.
Tobias and Javier’s discovery of a viable planet is full of adventure, suspense, and surprising discoveries. Both men learn new things about themselves and each other, and their findings lead to a fundamental change in the way humankind will have to deal with the future. Not all questions are answered in this first book of the series, but it gives a good starting point for some interesting developments as Alpha One decides what to do with the newly discovered information Tobias and Javier report back to them.
If you like science fiction stories set in a somewhat dismal future where humans need to look for a new home planet, if a superior falling for one of the men under his command is your thing, and if you’re looking for a read full of longing, lust, adventure, and heat, then you might like this novella.
