Murder, kidnapping and a disappearance. Trooper Rick Anthis could use a break. But he hopes it isn’t too late in coming.
Rick Anthis, a forty-five-year-old veteran of the Colorado State Police and his husband, Gabriel Thorkelson, a deputy sheriff in a nearby county, enjoy the peace of their suburban Boulder home, but the neighborhood’s tranquility is shattered by three rapid-fire gunshots. The pair’s quick reaction allows Rick to witness the abduction of his eight-year-old buddy Jacob, by his father.
In their quest to find the boy, the clues are sparse and time is of the essence since Jacob is diabetic, a condition Gabriel is far too familiar with. A search of the father’s apartment yields nothing more than an old hiking map that narrows the search down to a few hundred square miles. Rick and his CSI team are on the hunt, but with every bit of progress they make, it seems they are thwarted, especially when Gabriel turns up missing.
Reader Advisory: This book contains gun violence and an instance of domestic abuse.
First Edition published by Torquere Press, 2014. It has been revised, re-edited and substantially expanded for re-release with Pride Publishing.
What can be hotter than a man in uniform? Two men in uniform, of course. Rick is a trooper, his husband Gabe is a deputy sheriff, and they are the main characters in this intense story that has them focus on the kidnapping of the neighbor's son, Jacob, by his deranged father—after he kills the boy's mother, no less. The result is a story filled with suspense, and that only goes up a few notches when Gabe vanishes as well and Rick faces not just having to solve the case on his own, but getting Gabe as well as Jacob out of danger.
Rick is a determined guy, and this time the need to free the victims of a somewhat deranged kidnapper is not just professional. It was interesting to watch Rick focus on his role as a trooper, pushing all the personal fears aside so he could do his job. The constant battle inside him tore at my heartstrings, and I ended up admiring him for the stubborn and single-minded focus he demonstrated.
Gabe had a tough job having to deal with Jacob’s and his own diabetes on top of everything else. His inability to do anything to overpower their kidnapper got to him, but I loved him for his unwavering resolution to keep Jacob alive at all costs. The way Gabe made sure he left some clues for Rick to find was cute and, thankfully, effective.
If you like your romances with a side of suspense, if you enjoy reading about men who share a deep love and a determination to do the right thing, and if you’re looking for a hot, intense read, then you will probably like this short story.
