Book Blurb

The only vampire on the crew of the long-haul exploration ship Lightning Girl, Trev has learned to make his own entertainment. Or make entertainment with somebody else, like Ash, the sexy human navigator Trev's had his eye on.

But when the entire crew of Lightning Girl is killed except for Ash and Trev, the stakes of the men's growing relationship go from a quick fling to life and death. With the hyperdrive down and the oxygen running out, Trev is determined to save his lover's life -- no matter the cost.

Book Review

The exploration of space is a dangerous business in this vision of the future, and the two characters at the center of this emotional short story find out firsthand what the consequences can be. When everyone else dies in an inexplicable accident, only Trev, a vampire engineer, and Ash, a human navigator, are left to figure out how to survive.

They may have found a red star that, miraculously, does not kill Trev on contact, and it gives Trev something to enjoy for a short time. But the problem is that there isn’t much hope for a rescue. The author manages to convey the emptiness of space and loneliness the two astronauts face with great accuracy and it made me relate to them on an emotional level.

Only – Trev knows that he can (theoretically) survive for a very, very long time, while the fact that oxygen is running out means that Ash doesn’t have much more than a week. Both men have decisions to face, and with the beginning of a relationship to add to the equation, there are lots of factors to consider. Of course the solution may seem obvious, but nothing is ever as easy as it seems…

If you like short stories with life-changing dilemmas, if you think that a human and a vampire can manage to agree on a course of action that might just save them both, and if you’re looking for a read that is as hot as it is thought provoking, then you will probably like this short story.
