Book Blurb

Three hundred years into the apocalypse, centuries-old zombie queen, Creature Comfort, and the love of her afterlife, Dara Licked, leave their salt factory in Utah and find themselves beneath a gussied-up Lady Liberty, surrounded by a race of fabulous drag queens. Humanity (what’s left of it) is in dire trouble, attacked by unseen menacing forces, and only Creature can possibly save the day! Thus starts this hilarious tale of mystery and heart-pounding adventure, of friends old and new, of what it means to be alive and, most importantly, in love.

Book Review

Imagine my surprise when Rob Rosen informed me that he had written a follow-up novel to 'Queens of the Apocalypse'. I loved that book. I laughed through it and triumphed with those drag queens who were running for their lives in Cher's tour bus. I was beyond thrilled when I read the blurb for 'Creature Comfort' and discovered it is several hundred years in the future and this one, lone drag queen is still going strong. Well, as strong as one can go as a zombie queen.

"To rephrase all that, Creature Comfort, zombie drag queen, could still pop one serious boner. And when radiation is powering your turgid tool instead of blood (mine being quite stagnant), then watch out, because if you think Three Mile Island blew her stack, you ain’t never seen a long dead zombie do the same."

Creature has spent the past several hundred years living in a salt factory in Utah with her zombies and human minions. The iodized salt that her friends discovered all those years ago is what helps her retain a portion of her humanity. Enough, at least, to be queen and to do an occasional drag number, or three, for her adoring fans… including the thousands of zombies who spend their time groaning outside the gates. (I'm having fantastic 'Resident Evil' flashbacks!) Per the quote above, it only took Creature a little over twenty years to find her zombie soul mate in a grown man wearing a vintage Britney T-shirt. And thus, Dara Licked was born by salt.

I had no possible clue where Rob Rosen was going to go with this story, but it appears that when Destiny, Kit, and Blondella flew from Utah to New York over three centuries ago, their fabulousness didn't stop. Liberty Island, Ellis Island, and the Statue of Liberty have never looked quite so radiant… believe me, it's the best word I could come up with. Now these worshippers need Creature's help because this little world of Libetians is under attack. The more that Creature and Dara discover, however, the more the mystery intensifies.

As campy and fabulous as this novel was, it was exceptionally interesting from a somewhat scientific point of view. The point of view, of course, belonging to the author, but I was very interested in the workings of zombie life (or death) that the author concluded. How the radiation that consumed them centuries before from the solar flare continued to power their bodies, and the salt somehow helped the brain (what was left of it) conduct information to their internal nuclear reactors that then allowed them to talk, and have slightly more coordinated mobility than their brethren. Of course, the author being Rob Rosen meant there was a little something like laser fire from the eyes, and Superqueen being born, but you'll need to read this to get all the little ins and outs.

No pun intended, but 'Creature Comfort' was chock-full of fabulousness! A wonderful mystery and action adventure to boot… well, action in the form of shambling along as zombies are won't to do, but no less exciting for it. Thank you, Rob, it made my day!
