Comic book café owner and graphic novelist Johnny Fabian has been having a tough time ever since he caught his wife in bed with his best friend and business partner. Now, getting over a nasty divorce and trying to move on with his life, he almost can’t believe his sudden good fortune when local vet, Nelson O’Keefe—about the only other single guy in the country town of Ojai—invites him on the vacation he won in a radio contest to the sunny, sandy, sexy Caribbean.
Johnny thinks a break is just what he needs until he arrives on Saba Island and realizes his dream vacation is actually one big Mardi Gras—for gays. He freaks, especially when he learns he can’t get a flight off the island for at least a week.
Advised by his friends and traveling companion to just have fun and relax, he tells them he can’t. He’s not gay. Never was, never will be. No matter what his ex-wife has been telling everybody...
NOTE: This story was previously published by eXtasy Books in November 2010. This reissued version of the story has been revised and reedited.
‘Country Boy’ is a lighthearted look at the story of a man who thinks he is straight, only to end up learning that things aren’t as black and white as he was taught. Johnny has never really thought about his sexuality until he is confronted with reality during a vacation at a resort that turns out to be catering to gay men. The tone of the story is easygoing, and it’s written with a lot of humor, ensuring that there is a good balance between soul searching and the discovery of a new life – which is a happy occasion and can be very enjoyable indeed.
Johnny’s recent nasty divorce may have involved his wife accusing him of being gay, but he never took her seriously. The visit to a gay resort brings up all kinds of unfamiliar feelings and cravings in Johnny and, albeit reluctantly, he begins to redefine his sexuality. Johnny's struggle is a mix of a serious lack of understanding himself and plain shock at what emerges once he's at the resort, surrounded by gorgeous men who suffer from a serious lack of clothing. But it is Nelson who manages to hold Johnny’s attention, much to both men’s surprise and delight.
The secondary characters are hilarious and add to the richness of the environment. Of course, the setting being Jamaica, that alone means a great setting. If you enjoy stories about adults redefining who they are, if two men having fun (eventually) at a gay resort are your thing, and if you’re looking for a quick, fun read that is very entertaining, then you will probably like this novella.
