Book Review

It is the end of the twenty-first century, Earth is so polluted they can only survive thanks to a substance that grows on another planet, and a power-hungry military has been charged with keeping the supply of that substance going, no matter what the cost. Against this backdrop, the story of two men on opposite sides of a fight to secure the substance’s supply falling in love may be as unlikely as it is impractical, but Connor and Storm make it work.

Connor, a colonel in Earth’s UWD has been a loyal soldier all his life, and never really got involved in the politics of where and why he was sent to fight. Storm is not only a man who gets the wider political picture, but he is also ready to fight for what he believes in. When these two clash the only thing that is clear is their status as enemies, as far as the UWD is concerned. For Storm and even Connor though, that is far from the only consideration!

Connor doesn’t believe his assignment of protecting Sanctum from Earth’s arch enemies will be easy, considering their military might and his relatively small force of UWD soldiers. But he does not expect the political backstabbing, nor did he think the leader of the resistance – the one he is supposed to arrest – would be so good-looking.
Storm is a man of action who believes his people should fight for their freedom from an oppressive regime of bigots out to kill them even though they have already fled their home planet and settled on a new one. He definitely doesn’t plan on falling head-over-heels in lust and then love with the colonel leading the military out to protect the crop they grow rather than the people growing it.

Trust is not at the center of Connor and Storm’s relationship, not initially. They have enough heat and passion between them to allow the development of more, but it definitely isn’t easy. Connor is still loyal to the UWD’s orders when Storm long suspects the UWD to have their own objectives and to not care about Connor and his soldiers in the least. It’s a bad awakening for Connor when he realizes he’s been set up – but, to my relief, he is tough enough to deal with it.

If you like action-packed space adventures, if you enjoy stories about enemies becoming lovers, and if you’re looking for a read full of political intrigue, dark military machinations, and a passion so hot it makes the pages sizzle, then you will probably like this novella – I definitely enjoyed reading it a second time now that its newest incarnation has been published.
