Scarred by the cruel break-up with her former girlfriend, Nat has difficulty committing to Isabella. Isabella is not interested in a casual relationship, but she finds it hard to let Nat go. Will Nat and Isabella find the common ground to overcome the vast differences between their personalities and lifestyle?
This is the fourth and last novella in the High Rise series.
The fourth book from the 'High Rise' collection brings Isabella and Nat front and center once again. I do suggest reading the first three books before this one, but essentially book two which fully introduces these main characters. Nat pulls an unfortunately characteristic betrayal. Isabella knows she has deep feelings for Nat, but she slams the door in her face as soon as she is fully cognizant of Nat's unfaithfulness. I felt as blasted as both the primary characters. However, that is what made this story so endearing, heart throbbing, and salubrious. It was a super delightful conclusion to the aggregate stories, a completely delicious and enlightening experience. This last story especially, but in fact all the four are not to be missed!
Nat is a wounded child living in a thirty-five year old body. She believes she is incapable of finding and sustaining another complete loving partnership. I think in this arena she is a bit of a fool, but only because she has not worked through the trauma she experienced almost four years ago. On all other fronts, she is a sparkling and supremely passionate adult. This is an excellent rendering of how not facing one's fear can be an intolerable and self-destructive avenue that invariably does not allow one to cope with their own qualms.
Isabella is somewhat dismayed with herself for how unsuccessful she is when attempting to completely turn her back on Nat. She does recognize that she is deeply in love with Nat and even as a trained psychiatrist, she is subject to the tumultuous ebb and flow of this powerful human condition. The remarkable jousting matches that fuel the tension and heat things up to stupefying levels are exhilarating eye-opening events. The use of the clearly delineated change of viewpoints worked better than ever in this final story. It was as if I melded completely with Isabella and then Nat. Fantastic!
The emotional roller coaster ride in this final story was more than a trip and a half. The icy stares and cold disdain were startlingly powerful. Then, when these two were on the same page, the sex was blistering and thunderous. The entire spectrum from ardent fervor to glacial vehemence as Isabel barrels toward her fiftieth birthday simply left me breathless. What a brilliant conclusion and realignment for the four participants and especially for Nat and Isabella. Magnificent!
