Collin is a Neko, a human cat hybrid, who has never had the chance to leave Aloria Island. The only way a Neko is ever allowed to go to the human world is if they become a pet to a demon. Collin has been in love with Adrian, the Prince of the Demons, for years, but Adrian doesn't even seem to notice he exists, so when Porter, Prince Adrian's cousin, asks Collin if he would like to be his pet for the Annual Reaping of Souls Ball, Collin jumps at the chance.
Prince Adrian has secretly lusted after Collin for years, but a demon and a Neko becoming lovers is not only unheard of, such a relationship is banned. With a rebel army threatening to overthrow Prince Adrian and the royal council, Collin has to choose sides. But neither choice guarantees him a place next to Prince Adrian's side.
This is a world where demons reign – except they do it secretly. Helped by the mysterious Neko, hybrids of human and cat origin, they have melded with human society and are hiding in plain sight. The demons are ruled by royalty, and have Nekos as their pets, never their lovers. Politics, a threatening rebellion, and a few more mysteries as to what is going on kept my interest, and the characters of Collin, the Neko, and Prince Adrian, a powerful demon, are certainly hot together. They also have quite a few issues to solve, and some questions were clearer and more urgent by the end of this first book than they had been at the beginning. I certainly hope volume two is published soon.
Collin is a Neko and should be happy with his lot as a future pet to a demon. He can, of course, go back to the Neko home world, wherever that is, but neither he nor his older brother Rolland seem to have any real interest in doing that. Besides, Collin has fallen for a demon prince years ago, and his greatest wish is to become his pet. When circumstances arise for him to go to the human world as the prince’s cousin’s pet, he doesn’t hesitate despite Rolland’s misgivings. But what he finds is not at all what he expected.
Prince Adrian is cool, calm, and collected - unless Collin is around. Then he loses all vestiges of self-control and wants to “do unspeakable things” to the Neko. But he has a possible rebellion on his hands, a demoness after his hand in marriage, and a Neko he wants as so much more than a pet finally in his bed. Needless to say, he doesn’t lose his cool, but he comes close a few times. I suspect he has a plan, but will have to wait until the next book to see if that is true.
If you like stories with demons and mysterious hybrids whose role is not yet clear, if you enjoy reading about men who lust for each other but then have to deal with the reality of being together without any real preparation, and if you’re looking for a short, hot read set in an interesting paranormal world, then you will probably like this novella.
