In a snowy small town in England just before Christmas, handyman Christian thinks the world has ended -- his parents are still getting used to his being gay and have disinvited him to their Christmas. Former waiter David has just been fired and is still getting used to the fact that his useless, cheating, money-grabbing, waste-of-space boyfriend has just dumped him. Their mutual friend Cathy steps in and invites the two strangers to a non-family Christmas at the flat she shares with Tony.
With Cathy’s organizational skills and enthusiasm, these four spend Christmas together, making the best of it and getting to know each other. A spark of attraction clearly brings David and Christian closer, and spending the festive season together may be just what these two refugees need to calm their troubled souls.
But the past still haunts them both and threatens to be their undoing. Is love enough to overcome the burdens they bear? Can they find a happy Christmas together after all?
Somehow losing people we are close to is especially hard around Christmas time. In this story not just one, but both main characters are facing such a situation. And that is where the serendipity factor sets in, since they manage to not only meet up but create a connection that goes well beyond Christmas.
Christian thought he had found the perfect boyfriend, the one who made it worth telling his parents he is gay by asking them if he could bring the man over for Christmas. Not only did his parents tell him "not to bother", but they asked him to stay away himself since it was all a bit difficult for them to wrap their heads around. I wanted to knock their heads together so maybe some common sense would find some space in there. Then, to top it all off, the boyfriend leaves, so Christian is all alone.
David has just been fired while still trying to get over his cheating ex leaving him. He may be happy the bastard is gone, but he doesn’t like being alone, and having to figure out what to do for Christmas isn't easy. His friend Cathy's invitation is just what he needs, and meeting Christian turns out to be even better than he dared hope for.
Neither of them may have expected a new relationship, and both agree they need to take it slow. But they are so obviously suited for each other, the way they relate just fits, and I thought the story was really sweet because of it. And oh yea, once they do become a couple, they are very hot together. If you like stories that take pre-Christmas depression and work their magic on not one but two characters, if you enjoy reading slow-burning romances, and if you're looking for a sweet read with some fun Christmas traditions, both old and new, then you will probably enjoy this novella.
