Author Joshua Franklin Hill has a bad case of writer’s block. When an axe-wielding maniac knocks on his front door and asks to dig up his living room floor, he figures his Monday from hell is complete.
But an axe-wielding maniac may be just what Josh needs.
How could I resist reading a story with a title like ‘Chapter Five and the Axe-Wielding Maniac’? I expected a writer to be one of the main characters, what with Chapter Five in such a prominent position (and I was right). I also wasn’t sure whether or not to expect a thriller, what with the axe and the maniac being mentioned. Since this was a free read when I discovered it and I figured I could always stop reading if it got too scary (I am a giant coward where horror is concerned) – only to be laughing after the first few paragraphs and thoroughly enthusiastic soon after.
Joshua is trying to finish Chapter Five (after having failed for a few days already) when he is rudely interrupted by a young man after something underneath the cabin floor. Joshua’s reaction is entirely rational and as expected, the wielder of the axe is stubborn and persistent, and the events that unfold soon after this encounter had me charmed and wanting to read more. Luckily there seems to be a sequel with an equally funny name – ‘Apartment 14 and the Devil Next Door’ – and I will “report” back on it as soon as I get hold of a copy.
If you like humorous stories that turn out quite different from the way they begin, if you think that two strangers can bond over an unexpectedly shared piece of family history, and if you’re looking for an entertaining read that might just make you smile, you will probably like this short story as much as I do. I think that it’s great fun and utterly charming!
