Put aside by his former mate for his inability to bear children, Omega Lane retreated into the Alaskan interior and has lived there alone ever since. He's a lone wolf and a hermit, not part of the world and no longer wanting to be.
Until Carey comes across his path. Younger, and also an Omega, Carey's on the run from an Alpha who won't take no for an answer. Though Carey thinks at first he might be pregnant, he soon learns that isn't the case -- instead, he's going into heat.
Carey doesn't want or trust an Alpha anywhere near him. Lane, who has kept his preference for Omegas hidden for years, is the only one Carey chooses to trust. But can Lane let Carey into his life after living alone for so long?
And what if Carey decides he doesn't want to leave?
A friend and I were having a conversation the other day regarding how much we both enjoy the varied world building authors create particularly within the paranormal shifters genre and the mpreg trope. Sometimes I really want to read something very different, but other times I want to come back to a well loved, well written series where I can curl up with the most recent release and just revel in the familiar. Don't get me wrong, Willa Okati has created a fascinating world in her 'Omega Wolves' series and I always love visiting it.
Like 'Tooth and Claw' had two main characters who were alphas in body but both had omega hearts, I had a sneaking suspicion that 'Chapter and Verse' might be somewhat similar. Lane lives alone in the wilderness of Alaska and he's made a life there for five years. Lane was thrown out of his pack by his mate when it turned out that he was barren. I couldn't begin to imagine his pain. He meets Carey who is running from an abusive alpha and even though Lane only wants to be left alone, somehow Carey ends up back at his place.
Lane is tall and from a distance could pass as an alpha. The fact he's always preferred omegas is a secret he has kept to himself. Carey has always thought there was something wrong with him because he's not attracted to alphas. They're too loud, rough, noisy, and they frighten him. On their return trip to Lane's cabin they both realize that Carey isn't pregnant, he's in heat. Oh boy. I thought it was rather ingenious of Lane - although not unexpected since he still has heats - in the manner in which he cared for Carey.
What are they to do? Carey can't stay there. It's bad enough one omega lives by himself and homesteads, and Lane is fairly sure the alphas in the area leave him alone because he's older and his pheromone scent isn't strong enough for them to worry with. But they would come to investigate Carey, plus by their laws it's illegal for two omegas to live together with no alpha to care for them. It doesn't matter anyway when Carey's uncle and the alpha chasing him track Carey to Lane's cabin.
I absolutely fell in love with both of these men. Whoever says that omegas are weak has never met Lane. I loved the ending - it was perfect. In fact, Willa, the whole story was beautiful, sweet, and very romantic. Thank you.
