Nicholas Layton, fresh off his mission for his church, attends Falcon Pointe University. He plans to enjoy the next year before giving in to pressure to marry his girlfriend. He doesn’t think a man like him can be happy. When he meets other men who come from the same background who are happy, his perfectly structured life begins to fracture.
Between keeping up appearances of the old him, Nick investigates the man inside. He hangs out with other gay men and even dates one. Ethan Kierk is fascinating in ways girls never have been.
He’s lived his life by others’ rules, not imagining there was a way out. As everything from his old life crumbles, he has two choices. Sink or make his own rules and swim into the unknown.
First edition published under the title His Right Choice by Dreamspinner Press, August 2016. This book has been changed from its original form with new content.
It's nice to be returning to 959 Brenton Street and the 'Men of Falcon Pointe'. I have enjoyed the three previous releases and have more than liked the love stories they brought to the table. I have learned a lot about the Mormon faith and have seen some of these young men completely thrown away, but have seen others be accepted by at least one parent and siblings. It's been a nice change of pace that each story, while similar to a certain degree, hasn't been so identical to lose my interest. As such I was looking forward to Nicholas (Nick) and Ethan's story.
Nick is in his sophomore year at Falcon Pointe University (FPU), which unfortunately is only forty miles from his home and family. There are a lot of days recently where he thinks he didn't get far enough away from them, especially since all they want to know is when he's proposing to Kaylee, his long-term girlfriend. Of course he can't tell anyone he doesn't want to get married and he's not sure whether he might be gay.
What was he going to say? “Hey, I’m here to figure out why you all think I’m gay, and why I’m gay, and if there’s a way to get ungay.”
Much like in each of the previous installments, the main characters who are Mormon and trying to come to grips with their sexuality, are all very different. Nick has never questioned his teachings and he wants to rid himself of his feelings for other men. He's sure that if he spends time around them then he can "get it out of his system" and life will be hunky dory. Then he meets Ethan, a venture capitalist, who is a little older than Nick and supremely hot. When Nick learns that Ethan is an ex-Mormon and his story is pretty ugly, it really throws Nick for a loop.
The drama with Nick's parents was predictable but written well. I knew, of course, that Nick would have a ton of support from Cory, Trent, Bastien, David, Finn, Santi, Rafe, Levlin, and Ethan so I took comfort in knowing he wouldn't be left out in the cold. As I have said before, I think I could be very happy in Falcon Pointe having these men as my friends.
My favorite thing about this series is definitely the characters and I adore seeing the whole "gang" show up in each book. Nick and Ethan were a wonderful couple and it was fun to watch them fall in love. 'Changing the Rules' is a very good addition to the series and I'll be interested to see if there's more to come.
