For five years, Easton Harrison, of ‘Change of Heart’ by K.M. Neuhold, has mourned the loss of his husband, Paul. He has tried to reconcile his loss with thinking about what a good thing it is that Paul’s heart saved someone’s life, he can’t help but obsess about whether the person who got his heart deserves it.

Easton asks his best friend, Fox, who is a private investigator, to find the recipient. Easton needs to see, for himself, what kind of person he is. The only clue he has is the name signed on the thank you note the recipient was allowed to send Paul’s family. Although Fox feels it is an unhealthy idea, he wants to help Easton find some kind of peace of mind. Fox finds River; it turns out that he lives in the same city. He gives Easton the information he’s obtained about where he works, where he eats lunch, etc., along with a picture. Fox tells Easton that there is nothing in his history to suggest that he is anything other than a good guy. Again, Fox warns Easton that he sees nothing good in Easton contacting River.

Easton tries not to, but his curiosity gets the best of him. He goes to the coffee shop River frequents. He spots River on the way there and sees that he is about to step in front of a bus! Easton runs over and pulls him out of the way of danger. To thank him, River asks Easton to join him for breakfast. Easton knows he should say no, but he is unable to do so. River and Easton start going out as friends, but as they get to know each other, they become closer than expected. Easton is steeped in guilt with each step he and River take towards intimacy. He feels like being with River is betraying Paul. The more time that goes by, the harder it is for Easton to tell River that their meeting wasn’t random. He knows that he needs to confess, but there never seems to be a good time to do so. Now, it’s been so long that Easton is afraid he will lose River if he learns the truth.

The analogy of colors equalling joy of life was brilliant. Like Easton, when my son died, my world faded from color to black and white. It was easy for me to identify with Easton’s intense feeling of pain that comes after losing someone you love, along with finding a way to live without them. Thanks, K.M., for bringing Easton and River together so River could help Easton find his colors again.
