Escaping from a general intent on forcing him into a life he doesn’t want, Cas crash lands on a planet that was supposed to be inhospitable and desolate. It was anything but. Captured and mated before he even understood that the barren planet teamed with life, Cas finds himself living in a compound filled with warriors and families and three brothers who state that he belongs to them. Made a pet, Cas learns what it means to be loved by three warriors blessed by the goddess.
When trouble arrives, Cas has to decide if he will make the ultimate sacrifice in order to save the way of life for his mates, or will he allow the general to take everything from him, maybe even his life?
A man escaping from enemies who conquered his home planet, then forced him into military service and want to alter his looks so he "conforms", has my sympathies. This is the story of Cas, who is determined not to be told what to do, yet ends up in very willing submission to three aliens on a planet far, far away from home. The world of Terra Nova is an odd mixture of science fiction and fantasy—at least, that is what a goddess appearing out of thin air implies to me unless further explanations are given. Yet, it certainly intrigued me. It has a very unusual society, some interesting customs and behaviors, and men who know what they want; one of those things is a mate who will be adored and cherished whether he likes it or not.
Cas has already lost so much, including his home, but after being made the conquering general's "personal assistant" and being told his pointed ears will have to go, he says enough is enough and runs. Even risking his life by landing on a seemingly barren planet is a better option for him than being mutilated. I'm not sure if that is utterly brave or extremely stupid, but it works for him. The next thing I struggled with was his being claimed by three brothers before Cas had a chance to understand what that meant or say no—but again, it seems to work for him. And I loved that he was the one who holds the key to saving his new home planet from destruction!
The three warrior brothers, Zus, Zan, and Zev, are definitely imposing cat-like men who know exactly what they want and expect the mate they choose to obey their rules, even though he is from another planet. Not to mention they genetically change him so he is better able to fulfill their needs—a very debatable point, in my opinion, especially since it happens without the changee's consent. The brothers share Cas as a mate (but not each other), and each of them has slightly different strengths and preferences, but when it comes right down to it, they are very similar in what they are looking for. I was grateful to see they were mostly benevolent (although I hated that they punished Cas at the end despite all he had done for them). But have to say their overbearing attitude, for me, was borderline dictatorial.
If you like reading about alien societies with very different morals and attitudes to ours, if men who know what they want and demand submission from the man they have chosen pique your interest, and if you're looking for an imaginative and unusual read that crosses genre boundaries by adding a goddess to a science fiction world, then you might enjoy this novella. I am curious what happens in the next volume, and hope for more background and a more detailed explanation of some of the world building aspects.
