Patrick's loss is Remy's gain.
A Club Raven Novel
After his twin dies in battle, it’s Patrick Daniels’ duty to marry his brother’s fiancée. Too bad he can’t make himself do it, and in his distress, he manifests a psychic talent that’s stronger than the tornadoes in his native East Texas. Then a mysterious man from a place called Club Raven steps in and sweeps Patrick off to the booming East Coast city of Baltimore.
Club Raven veteran Remy Blanchard sees Patrick and knows, even though Patrick is very ill, that this is the challenge he’s been waiting for. He nurses Patrick back to health, and begins to teach Patrick to control his talent. His methods might be unconventional, and Patrick might be new to the kinds of sexual games Remy knows best, but the two of them find something in each other that might be just as magical as the gentleman’s club where they meet.
The two previous stories in this series, set in and around a paranormal investigations agency masquerading as a gentleman’s club in 1870s Baltimore, focused on psychic powers and paranormal abilities I was somewhat familiar with from previous reading. They are those of a medium in book one and the talent to influence others’ behavior in book two. But this third volume took me in a somewhat more unexpected direction – and I loved that!
Patrick has survived a battle that killed his twin brother, and is now expected to “do the right thing” by marrying his twin’s fiancée and providing the heirs his father wants. But Patrick is not attracted to women and has no intention of living his twin brother’s life. His father will not listen to him, and finally, driven into a proverbial corner, Patrick’s powers manifest and almost cause a catastrophe. It becomes clear that Patrick needs help, but when he is brought to Club Raven his psychic abilities become as much the focus of the man helping and mentoring him as the “darker desires” Patrick has always felt when fantasizing about being intimate with a man.
Remy is a veteran of Club Raven, and I got the impression he was just a tiny bit jaded. Patrick changes that quite quickly, and Remy embarks on a journey that will help Patrick gain control (in more than one area of his life) and, ultimately, give both of them what they want from a life partner. Remy is a Dom and he has just the right level of empathy and enough willpower to help bring Patrick under control. This is not an easy task and there is much trial and error, but the scenes between them are very hot as a result.
If you’d like a look at psychic abilities from a historical perspective, if you think that a sub and a Dom who work well together in and out of bed sound like an interesting couple, and if you’re looking for a read with lots of psychic power that needs taming, then you will probably like this novella.
