Caleb Lyall enrolls in college, hoping to research, and perhaps find a cure for, the lycanthropy that has afflicted his family for centuries. He finds a welcome ally in the form of Desmond Quinn, a graduate student who is more than willing to help Caleb adjust to his new life behind the ivy-covered walls of academe.
Just as Caleb begins to wonder if Desmond might be his destined mate, strange animal attacks begin to plague the campus. Even worse, Caleb suffers frightening blackouts he can’t bring himself to tell Desmond about.
As he searches for answers, Caleb discovers he is not the only person on campus with a secret. Rumors suggest strange cultlike meetings attended by professors and students alike , bizarre underground experiments, and midnight rituals ending in madness.
Each night, the beast edges closer and its hunger grows. Soon everything Caleb values is at risk, including the man he doesn’t quite dare to love.
First Edition published by Silver Publishing, 2012.
This second story in what looks to be a trilogy around the three brothers Darius, Caleb, and Serge, contains just as much mystery and secrecy as the first; except in a totally different way. Where book one was around exonerating Darius, this second volume sees Caleb involved in some pretty shady and dangerous dealings that masquerade as scientific research at the college he starts attending.
Caleb is anxious about going to college away from Moon Lake due to the constant (if somewhat misplaced fear) that he will shift before he can make it back to safety. Most of his fears seem unfounded as he meets Desmond and gets through his first few classes. However, a few utterly weird encounters with his professor give him cause for great concern, and when mysterious animals are reported to roam the campus, he fears the worst – that it was him in an uncontrolled stage of transformation which he cannot even remember.
Desmond is a graduate student and the mysterious professor’s teaching assistant. Despite that, he has never before noticed anything amiss. He is extremely supportive of Caleb, and starts his own investigation as soon as he suspects that something isn’t quite right. He’s the kind of guy I would love to have in my corner in a crisis.
If you like shifter stories that focus on the way a werewolf would cope with real life, if a mix between a mystery and a healthy dose of conspiracy theory seems interesting, and if you find the “mad scientist” an interesting opponent, you might like this book.
