Micah Ellis is an affluent businessman, comfortable in his life and work, as long as nothing happens to shake up his routine. Which is exactly what one Devon Mallory does, with his bright blue eyes and dirty skin and the forceful personality that’s everything Micah desperately needs but is too afraid to ask for.
Micah and Devon enter into a Dom/sub relationship and navigate the world of BDSM and Micah’s crippling insecurities as they gradually fall in love. But Micah’s past is coming back to haunt him, and they must face it together—and that means learning acceptance and discovering that they both deserve love their way and on their own merits.
First edition published under the series name Mended Hearts by Dreamspinner Press, January 2017.
‘Broken Halo’ challenges more than one preconception about people’s roles in life, and had me curious about where the unusual characters would go from the opening scene. Micah and Devon do not have a good start to their relationship at all, in fact, for the longest time it doesn’t look as if they’re even interested in becoming friends, never mind more. They are not just very different men, they seem to rub each other the wrong way. But as soon as they begin to look underneath the surface, mostly due to coincidence rather than planning, they discover the potential for so much more. The journey they both end up taking together isn’t easy, somewhat kinky, and has quite a few obstacles – a horrible ex and Micah’s neurosis just to name a couple.
Micah looks like the picture of success on the outside, but he has lots to deal with internally. He needs routine, is a germophobe, and has very little self-worth. Much of his lack of confidence is due to an abusive ex, who is still in his life for business reasons, but Micah is generally not a very self-assured guy. He is a natural submissive, but it’s not something he is comfortable with and, based on how his ex treated him, I can see why. Running into Devon turns out to be one of the best things that ever happened to Micah, but you wouldn’t know it from the way they treat each other at first.
Devon is young, knows what he wants, and runs his own car repair business. He may not have recognized that he is a Dom before meeting Micah, but it quickly becomes apparent that Devon certainly has the right mindset. He is sweet and totally respects Micah, so everything he learns and does in terms of BDSM is for Micah’s benefit. And while I don’t believe you can learn what he does by doing research on the Internet (above all, that would not be safe), but this is fiction, right? Devon enjoys himself as much as Micah and their scenes together are super hot with a wonderful underlying emotional component I liked.
But all is not well, and when Micah’s past comes back to haunt him, things go wrong to the point of a breakup. Micah does the only thing he can figure out to do and runs – all the way to India. And while this sounds drastic, in this case, it proves that sometimes all you need is a little distance and some perspective to figure out what’s really important.
If you like BDSM stories with an inexperienced Dom and a sub who has to relearn what a healthy power exchange is all about, if you are intrigued by two men who could not be more different if they tried, and if you’re looking for a read that is a journey for both participants, very loving, and incredibly hot, then you will probably like this novel.
