Jackie is not. His fear of shifters sends him into a panic, uncaring that they have already mated. He wants nothing to do with shifters, even if he is one. After being tortured by a madman bent on creating omega shifters, the last thing Jackie wants to do is get involved with someone on four paws.

But fate will not be denied.

Suffering from a mating heat gone wild, both men give into their desires for each other. When truths are spoken, they both discover that they have a lot more to learn about the world than they thought they knew.

Shifters and humans come in all shapes and sizes, some good, some not so good. Boone and Jackie just have to figure out who they can trust before the past destroys the future they are trying to build together.

Book Review

This ninth book in the ‘Scent of a Mate’ series focuses on one of my favorite characters from the series: Boone Marshall, the sheriff of Potter’s Creek. Boone is one of the many Marshall brothers and he is trying to rebuild their world after the destruction the luckily-now-dead Alpha Aldo Marshall caused over the years. Something evil is still afoot though, so when Boone meets his mate, Jackie, and it turns out the man used to be a human until someone experimented on him and… well, let me just say it doesn’t take long to unearth a connection to previous events.

Boone and Jackie do not have an easy time of it. Boone is overjoyed he has found his mate, but Jackie wants nothing to do with him once he finds out Boone is a shifter. Jackie is so afraid of shifters that I wasn’t sure what he was going to do once he shifts himself. Jackie’s fear is one of many reasons he needs to learn to trust Boone before that happens. The other reason is that Jackie is just a tad different from what many people expect a man to be like – and the illustration on the cover shows that perfectly. Jackie has long hair and likes to dress in women’s clothes, and that caused a lot of grief in the past. Jackie has to learn to believe that Boone doesn’t only accept his preferences, but actually likes them.

Jackie and Boone end up facing the bad guys together – and that is a very good thing. It takes everything they have, and the pride’s help as well, to deal with the newest madman. Between a kidnapping, several adventures, and a major surprise, this certainly turned out to be a very wild ride.

If you like stories about lion shifters who find their mate only to discover there are several problems and obstacles to their happiness, if you enjoy reading about threats, secrets, and surprises, and if you’re looking for an action-packed read that is as intense as it is hot, then you will probably like this novella.
