Book Review

The bonds that bind the members of a family are not always biological, not always the same when they are not, nor are they easy to define in all cases. This is a story, a snippet in two people’s lives that shows one example of a very unusual situation that led to a family bound by joy, rather than blood. It focuses on the moment when genderfluid James/Jamie asks their mother, Charlie, who their father is.

James/Jamie knows Charlie is asexual and demi-romantic, and that there never was a relationship worth mentioning in the fifteen years of James/Jamie’s life. So they are curious. The answer is not at all what they expected, and I was surprised as well. But it made an interesting sort of sense as well, and was very emotionally satisfying. Love and joy, after all, should be the more important factors in defining a family, and as far as I can see, James/Jamie and Charlie hit that one right on the head!

If you like unusual stories, and if you want to have a look at a very special, very loving little family of two to find out more about what binds them, then you might like this short story.
