While working on Cade and Jax’s new lodge, their beta, Rayce, notices someone watching them from the hillside. Taking the man captive, Rayce is shocked to find his own blood mate. The new man, Tyler Adams, is a good looking actor, and surprisingly, his father was a Werekin. He says he’s only there to see the wolves in action, but no one believes him. The alphas believe the Hunters have returned. Rayce is torn between protecting his mate and discovering his secrets. Meanwhile, Jax and Cade are having problems with their new bloodlust connection and Nicky is about to start on a journey of discovery, not only about himself, but about his place in the wolf hierarchy.
This tenth volume of the series is not just Rayce and Tyler’s story of dealing with dark secrets and the continued wolf stance that “pets” (those werekin who do not turn into wolves) and human mates are somehow weaker. Tyler is angry about that for many reasons, but so are Jax, from the previous book, and Nicky, Alpha Marco’s mate. All three of the “weaker” men have something to prove to themselves as well as their mates and it made for a very exciting installment in this continuing saga of the Dark Hollows wolf pack.
Tyler is the son of a natural pet who escaped living in the pack, but all he has heard from his father is how awful the wolves are, and how they abused him. So when Tyler finds out about Jeremy Tate (bad guy extraordinaire from a few books back) and contacts him, he falls for his line about needing to “exterminate” the wolves hook, line, and sinker. The only problem is that, once he meets Rayce and is “assimilated” into the pack, he finds out not all is as it seems. The blood match he has with Rayce makes things easier, but the battle is long from over.
Rayce is a good beta until he needs to stand up for his mate. As is always the case, Tyler quickly becomes the most important person in Rayce’s life, and he will protect him at all costs. Rayce’s internal battle between loyalty to his alpha and pack on one side, and his mate on the other was fascinating to watch. But, different from Jax, Rayce will always put the pack’s interests above his own; not that he will betray Tyler, but he will not go against pack interests either. He would leave before doing that.
In an interesting addition to this book, Jax and Cade from the previous book are back. Jax is clearly becoming an alpha as well, thanks to the bloodlust between Cade and him, but that brings its own challenges. Legend says that in cases like theirs both alphas will rule together, but he has no idea how that is supposed to work. Cade is not giving him the respect he deserves as a partner, or so Jax thinks, and the fights that ensue are serious and, in addition to all the machinations from Jeremy Tate, had me on the edge of my seat.
If you like stories about men who learn everything they have believed to be right was incorrect or an illusion, if you enjoy reading about a man who has been taught wolfshifters are bad but then becomes a member of the pack, and if you're a fan of the ‘Dark Hollow Wolf Pack’ series, then you will probably like this tenth novella in the series.
