Vampire hunter Adrien Gilbert never dreamed he’d fall for his prey or that his love, Nicolas Lambert, would give him the gift of immortality. But when a hunter bent on destroying the truce between vampires and hunters throws the gauntlet at Adrien’s feet, Adrien must travel through time to save Nicolas, and with him, the entire vampire race.

The time has come to make a choice—one they will live with for eternity.

In this final installment in the Blood Trilogy, Adrien and Nicolas must face their greatest enemy in a deadly last confrontation. But to prevail, they’ll need to master the enemies within.

When Adrien awakens to a future he doesn’t recognize, he faces an impossible decision: live a perfect life with Nicolas in a shattered world, or risk everything to repair a broken past. But before he can challenge vampire hunter Verel Pelletier, he must master the demon who lives in his own mind—and learn to control his ability to travel through time. With Nicolas by his side, he prepares for a final battle against a powerful adversary who likes to play games with the past and future.

But the price of ensuring a future for their loved ones may be an eternity spent alone.

Book Review

“Love is space and time measured by the heart.”  ~ Marcel Proust

In ‘Blood and Eternity’ by Shira Anthony, Adrien asks himself what he is willing to sacrifice to be with Nickolas, the man he loves more than life itself. Once again he's shifted into another time line, one in which he has Nico (Nickolas) with him again, but Adrien knows that as much as he wants that, he's not sure he can give up his quest to correct the original timeline to right the wrongs caused by his and others’ actions.

Waking up with Nico is more than wonderful, but Adrien is not content. Nothing is familiar to him in this place in time and he soon realizes why; he shouldn't be here. He's in Nico's timeline, not his. Adrien also realizes that his arch enemy, Pelletier, has found him again and sends Adrien a message that if Adrien stops his quest to change the past, that he will leave him and his “little vampire” alone – but Adrien's conscience will not let him do that. With regret, Adrien tells his demon to send him back into the past to continue his quest to defeat his enemy, except this time is different, Nico comes with him. Nico tells Adrien in no uncertain terms that they do it together or not at all. Adrien is both thrilled and terrified at this development. The demon inside is still trying to control Adrien, but Adrien, although it's an excruciating process, is slowly learning to control it and to be able to call upon its strength at will, rather than being at its mercy.

In this timeline, Adrien and Nico go back to what is left of Lambert mansion where they run into Jean Lambert. He's startled to see Nico and Adrien there and demands an explanation. What words can't explain, Nico's blood makes perfectly clear. By this time, Pelletier has become aware that Adrien hasn't accepted his offer to stop “interfering” by continuing to set the past right, and prepares to strike once again. In doing so, they become embroiled in a life-or-death struggle to protect the last of the vampires who were not slaughtered due to Pelletier's perversion of the truth, which resulted in splitting the hard-won alliance between vampires and hunters, causing the death of many innocent people, hunters, and vampires alike. Pelletier is considered a hero for his actions, revered by the hunters and considers the vampires who have survived the massacre mortal enemies. Adrien and Nico join forces with what's left of the ancient vampires. They are surrounded by enemies who were partially created from Nicolas's blood, no longer men but abominations, linked by blood to their master, Pelletier. If they don't win this battle, Adrien may not have another chance to set things right and spend an eternity with Nico.

Bringing together several timelines involving different results for several characters is quite a feat, but Shira has done it. As complicated as time travel can be, at least I understood Adrien's goal of trying to correct the past. Therefore, he kept going back in order to learn lessons necessary to achieve his objective. Adrian's love, passion, and desire to be with Nico for eternity was a gigantic motivating factor. Their love is a beautiful thing. Thanks, Shira, for a great ending to a complex yet exciting story.
